Windows 7 I have been getting a lot of BSOD lately. Please help!

Hello everybody, I'm from Buenos Aires City, Argentina

I'm desperate. I don't know what to do. I've been having a lot problems with my laptop (Lenovo y560) since last thursday (February 13th). I don't know why, but, out of nowhere, random BSOD's have been appearing every single day since that day. They've occurred in different situations like, for example, while I was watching videos at youtube, reading posts in forums or just listening to music on my laptop. And all of them with different errors (e.g. page_fault_in_nonpaged_area; apc_index_mismatch; system_service_exception; memory_management; and some of them didn't have a name at all). The minidump files, that are supposed to be saved in order to understand the problem, just dissapear after a day. I don't know if that's supposed to happen.

All of this started the same day I got an update from Windows. I don't know if that is what is causing my problems.

I'll attache a couple of images of the updates from windows that appear in the control panel for that day.
They are all for the 2010 office and those are the only ones that were updated on 02/13/14. There are a couple more from the office 2010 that were updated on 01/08/14 and one from the adobe reader that was updated on 02/04/14. The rest of them belongs to previous years. Oddly enough, I'm sure I've received another update after the first BSOD but it is not listed in the windows update list...

Here is the description page of one of those updates: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2837583

I recieve at least one BSOD per day. Only once I've received two (one in the morning and one at night).

The last one I've receive was today, Februaru 18th at 6:00 p.m. (Argentina's time). and the name of that BSOD was "page_fault_in_nonpaged_area".

Here I attache the .dmp file.

When I get the BSOD, my laptop restarts itself (although in one ocation it turned itlself off) and ask me if i want to run windows normally or enter in the safe mod. If I choose to run Windows normally, the screen where I type my password goes black and I can't do anything. A couple of times the screen appeared but with some colours problems and it didn't let me do anything either. So I enter the safemode with networking. In there, windows tells me that "it has recovered from an unexpected error" (my windows is in spanish so please excuse me if I don't do the translation well) and asks me if it should look for a solution to the problem. I click in "search solution" but nothing happens. Sometime, it doesn't even give me that message. Still, I'm able to use most of my computer, so I don't think is a temperature problem. But I'm not allowed to use the Office. It says that it needs to intall somethings but an error always occure during the instalation and the application just shut down (all this in safemode with networking). After a couple of minutes in the safemode, I restart my laptop and everything is back to normal again. So that's what I do to fix the problem at the moment: I enter safemode with networking, I click "search solution" even if nothing happens, wait some minutes, sometimes I schedule a "comprobation for errors" (again, excuse my translations) in C/:--->properties--->tools (and I abort it when it starts when I restart because it takes too long and nothing changes), and restart (or turn off and then turn on) my laptop and the problem is gone until the next time.

A friend of mine told me that I can restore the system until te point where all this started. i'll attache an image of that. Should I do it?

Please, Can somebody help me? I really suck with computers

Thanks to anybody that take some time to read my problem.

Hi,
your system may have become corrupted so a restore to an earlier time might help. Either way your missing a service pack. Please install the SP1 download:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=5842
Any issues use the update readiness tool:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=3132

I notice your using Avast. Please remove as it has been known to cause issues in the past. Install MSE:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/pc-security/mse.aspx

Your drivers are supplied by the manufacturer and it looks like no recent updates are available.
http://support.lenovo.com/en_GB/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT072743

Download this app and test your RAM (instructions on how to use it are on the download page):
http://www.memtest.org/

Look in the start menu for command prompt. Right click on it and choose properties and then run as admin. Type:
sfc /scannow
Press enter and await results.

Please post any new dmp files.

Hi, thank you so much for answering me!

This what has happened so far:

I restore my system to 02/10/14. 3 days prior the beggining of the BSOD. It didn't take so long. Between 10-15 minutes. Most of the programs that I had unistalled between the 13th and the 18th came back (C.S 1.6; minecraft, hamachi, MSE) I had MSE at the time the BSOD started showing up. I tried various antivirus to see if it was a virus, being avast the last one I tried. Anyway, I unistalled all those programs again, and everything seemed normal. Windows installed 10 updates that I will attache here. I run the computer like 7 hours in a row. At one time, I tried to adjust my screen position and the lower part of it became yellow and for a moment it turned off. Then "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" appeared. That was a common error I had when my laptop was new and it stopped by itself so I didn't pay to much attention in this ocation. So I kept using the computer and while I was watching a video on youtube the screen froze in a white screen without letting me do anything so I had to turn off the computer manually. I did the same ritual of always (safemode, etc.), and when I got to the password screen in normal mod and type my password, the computer froze again and this time I got a BSOD with the title CACHE_MANAGER. So I did once again the ritual, and now I'm here. What seems odd to me, is that I got TWO .dmp files after that. One from today (02/19/14) and one from 02/10/14 :S The one weighing around 370 KB belongs to 02/10/14

I haven't done the mem test yet.

Again thank you so much for your time!

Hi,
you really need to install SP1 as outlined above and please run the memtest86 app. Also just check that the vents are free from any dust build up.

Hi again!

I went to the page that you gave me to download the SP1, but there are 10 different files. Which one should I download?

I don't have the skills nor the knowledge to check the state of my vents, but I have a friend who does, so I'll give him a call. I have never performed any kind of clean on my computer's hardware since I bougth it in 2011.

I had some problems with the mem test, I downloaded the ** Mem test86+ V5.01 (27/09/2013)** Pre-Compiled Bootable Binary (.zip) but my daemon tools version couldn't read the .bin file... I'll download a new one and see if that helps the cause.

Also, I had 2 more BSDO today (02/20/14) with just an hour of difference. Here I attache the .dmp files

Thanks again for all your help!

Hi,
both dumps were the same, memory management.

I notice your using Avast. Please remove as it has been known to cause issues in the past. Install MSE:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/pc-security/mse.aspx

sptd.sys Sun Oct 11 21:55:14 2009: SCSI Pass Through Direct Host - Daemon Tools (known BSOD issues with Win7). I missed this first time around, please remove to test.

The download for SP1 isn't in the numbered downloads it's above those with a Red download button. (next to where it say's 'select language').

Memtest86 pre compiled Bootable ISO needs to be downloaded and then burnt to disk. You then need to enter your Bios and change the boot order so that the machine boots off the memtest disk. This is so your RAM can be tested properly outside of the windows environment. If your unsure on how to change the boot order check with your machines manual. I did some checking on this and you might have to use the USB version as the CD/DVD drive may not be included in the boot devices. Basically it's the same process but your using a USB drive instead of a CD/DVD. The correct download is on the memtest site for USB.

Cleaning out the vents doesn't require any specialised knowledge. All you need is a little brush and in a perfect world some compressed air but failing that a good blow with the lungs will suffice. Just make sure any vents are free from dust and aren't clogged..

Hi there.

Do you mean I have to unistall the daemon tools? I don't have it installed. I've only installed it when I needed to use it, but I always uninstall it after that.

I was not talking about those numbered programs, I was atalking about the ones that appear after I click in "dowload". I'd attached here how it looks what I'm talking about. Do I have to dowload all of them? Also, the first one is a .iso. Will I have tu burn it to?

I'll see how I can run the mem test. Too bad there isn't an easier way to do it... (at least for me)

I was not talking about the cleaning itself. I was talking about the fact that I need to open this thing to do it and the fact that is a notebook makes it a bit more complicated than in a regular PC.

As far as the problem goes, this is the news:

Yesterday, after I got those BSOD I talked you about, I kept using my Notebook a while. 3 hours more or less. Nothing else happened, I turn it off in the normal way. Today when I turn it on it went straight to the "password screen's bug" where it goes completely black. I've realised that the "things" are actualy there, is the screen the one that is no showing me anything. I knew it because I typed my password and it made the usual sound that you get when you enter Windows after typing your password. After that, it made an usual "error sound" (which I couldn't see what it was about since the screen wasn't showing me anything). But the system is actually working, the screen is the one that it isn't.
Anyway, I rebooted the computer, try entering the safe mode with networking but it didn't work. It just stood in the "loading files" screen for a while, more than usual. So I rebooted again, this time I tried only safemode without networking but it happened the same thing. Maybe I was too impatient. I turned it off and went out to get some things, the I came back to my place and try it again. I set to safemode without networking, it took a little while than usual but manage to enter but it gave me the "startup repair". It said that it repaired something (took about 10 min) and then it rebooted itself. Yet again it couldn't enter in normal mode, but there is when I typed my password and saw (actually heared) that it was actually running, the screen just didn't show it.
Anyway, I rebooted again, enter safemode with networking (this time it worked) and now I'm here in safemode with networking writing all this.
Windows said It recovered from an error and let me .dmp file that i'll attache here. It also gave me another file in "appdata/local/temp". "WER something" was it name. That kind of files also generated in the BSOD issues but I though only the .dmp files mattered. I tried looking for this one but I couldn't find it :S.

Do you thing this could be a problem with the software of my screen? Like I told you, I use to have the "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" issue back in 2011 ,when my notebook was brand new, while I was watching videos in youtube. Then it stopped happening alone.

My notebook is an lenovo Ideapad y560 like I said before, but there like 10 of those models. The one I've got has an intel(R) i5(TM) M560 @2.67 GHz 2.66 GHz.

I think this one is the one.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246003

Maybe there is a new update in the drivers for THAT model of idepad y560...

I'm going to reboot (or "restart", I don't know the proper translation) my computer now to see if at least I can enter in normal mode before going to work.

I'll see later if I can run that "sfc /scannow" thing that you told me. I couldn't the first time. And I'll unistall the avast.

Also I didn't understand what was this thing that you gave me before:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=3132

Thank you again so much for helping me with my problems.

That's a service pack download which is need by windows to run correctly. Have you ever run windows update? Normally this is applied by the windows update utility but for some reason you have it missing. Please install to ensure correct functionality of the operating system. After you click on the download button you need the top download which has 'update' in it's title, the others have things like 'symbol' mentioned which is to do with debugging.

Also open My computer and right click on the C drive. Choose properties from the list and then look along the top for 'Tools'. Now look for 'Error checking' and click that. You'll also need to click any boxes to repair sectors. This guide will help you:

Hi!

Sorry I haven't reply for a while. It turns out that my problem was pretty common with machines made by lenovo. In the end it was my ATI graphic card that is working bad. I disabled it and now it's working with the intel graphic card integrated to my mother board. It has been almost 2 weeks without any kind of error or BSOD. It's not the best thing, but at least it works fine with office and youtube. I'll start saving money for a new desktop computer. I've learned my lesson. Never buy a laptop unless you are an executive. Thank you so much for your time!

Hi Michael,
thank you for taking the time to update your thread. It always helps when there's a conclusion and I'm glad to hear you have a solution of sorts.
