Default Browser Improvements
- Setting the default browser with the "Set default" button will now apply not just to http, https, .htm, and .html, but also to more link and file types in the EEA:
- Link types: ftp, http, https, read
- File types: .htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml, .shtml, .svg, .xht, .xhtml, .xml
- Setting the default browser also pins it to the Taskbar in the EEA, unless you deselect this option.
- Browsers can be set as the default for .pdf files if they support this.
- These rollout changes started in Windows Insider builds and are coming to all retail builds in July 2025.
Windows Search Changes
- Apps can now register to provide web search results in Windows Search. These can operate in parallel, with users able to reorder and manage providers in Settings.
- This is already available in Insider builds and rolls out to all users in the EEA in early June 2025.
- Updated developer documentation.
Microsoft Store Uninstallation
- The Microsoft Store app can now be uninstalled from Start and Settings like other apps, but apps installed from the Store will continue to get updates even if Store is uninstalled.
- You will be able to reinstall the Store app if needed.
- Rolls out later in 2025 for Windows 10 and 11 devices in the EEA.
Microsoft App Changes
- The Microsoft Bing app (web search in Windows Search) now opens links in your default browser in the EEA.
- The Start Experiences app (widgets/feed) now also opens web content in your default browser on Windows 11. (On Windows 10, News & Interests opens links in Edge as before.)
- Microsoft Edge will no longer prompt to be set as default unless you open it directly (from its icon).
- When Edge is uninstalled, other Microsoft apps won’t prompt you to reinstall it (except for certain PWAs). This rolls out in June.
- Edge version 137.0.3296.52 (released May 29, 2025) starts some of these changes.
Rollout Timeline
- The majority of these changes are staged: first to Windows Insider builds, then to regular (retail) builds (Windows 10/11) starting in June and July 2025.
