I am trying to move a user in a domain to a new PC. Both PC's are Windows 7 Pro.

I tried Easy Transfer and the transfer was successful. However when I log on, I do not have the users desktop icons, background, or shortcuts.

I am a bit confused because on the old PC the users profile shows as local. However all of the folders - Desktop,Documents etc reside on the server and if I look at properties of Desktop on the old PC its pointed to the users server folder.

I am giving Forensit's User Profile Wizard 3.7 now but its already failed 2x so I am looking for direction on how to get this done. Thanks so much.

Solution
When transferring a user profile from an old PC to a new one within a domain, especially from Windows 7 to Windows 7, there are some considerations to keep in mind. Here are a few steps and tips to help you with this process:

1. Windows Easy Transfer:

  • Windows Easy Transfer: While Windows Easy Transfer can move files and settings, it might not always transfer everything perfectly, especially in domain environments.

    2. User Profile Migration:

  • Forensit's User Profile Wizard: Since Easy Transfer didn't fully meet your requirements, Forensit's User Profile Wizard can be a good alternative. However, if it failed in your case, some manual intervention might be needed.

    3. Manual Steps:

Here are some manual steps you can take to ensure a more complete transfer of the user profile:
    • 1. Verify Profile Location: Check the user profile's actual location. Even though it shows as local, the server might redirect certain folders like Desktop to a server path.
    • 2. Copy Profile Directly: Instead of relying on tools, you can manually copy the user profile from the old PC to the new one. This involves copying the user folder (C:\Users\Username) to the new PC under the same path.
    • 3. Registry Changes: After copying the profile, you might need to adjust registry settings to point to the new profile location.

    4. Additional Steps:

    • Group Policy: Ensure that there are no Group Policies in place that restrict the transfer of certain profile elements.
    • Permissions: Make sure the user has appropriate permissions on the new PC for their profile.
    • Domain Membership: Confirm that the new PC is properly joined to the domain.

    5. Troubleshooting:

If Forensit's tool continues to fail, you might need to investigate the specific error messages or logs to identify the issue.

    Next Steps:

    • Try manually copying the user profile from the old PC to the new one.
    • Adjust registry settings if needed to point to the new profile location.
    • Verify Group Policies and permissions that might affect the profile transfer.
If you encounter specific errors or obstacles during these steps, feel free to provide more details for further assistance.
