Windows Vista My Vista Freezes and it sucks

My Vista Freezes. . .it's either the start menu or the entire desktop, i've had my comp. for 1 1/2 years and I'm ready to throw it away, this is b.s, not to mention I have Windows live onecare and that doesn't work at all. on top of that it won't allow me to update, so yeah.
So if anyone got any ideas lemme know !
