Windows 10 "No connections are available"!

Having been encouraged to upgrade to Fall Creators Update I experienced problems with windows freezing. Eventually, I decided to cut my losses and return to the old version of W10. Now I find I need a password to access Windows. I've tried several and believe one of them is correct but it tells me it's incorrect. I suspect this is because I have no internet connection. An icon in the bottom left corner says "connect to the internet". If I click on it, it says "no connections are available". I'm connected to my router with an Ethernet cable. Any help would be much appreciated.

The computer should cache half of the password hash even for a MS account and authenticate you. Is it a username or email address as the username?
