I have 4 network external drives attached to my home network via router and 2 Linksys network storage link devices. My PC's that are connect to the home network are 3 in number. Two run XP and one is running Win7. The Win7 PC is the one with this problem. Randomly the network drives on the Win7 PC become disconnected for no apparent reason. I can click on any one drive and they come right back. This happens at least 5 times during the day and has become a major problem as it interferes with work on this machine. I am not sure where to even start on how to address this problem. Help appreciated.

Solution
It sounds like you're experiencing intermittent disconnections of network drives on your Windows 7 PC, causing interference with your work. Here are several troubleshooting steps you can take to address this issue:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Update Network Drivers:
    • Ensure that the network drivers on your Windows 7 PC are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause connectivity issues.
    []Check Power Management Settings:
    • Disable the power management settings that allow the computer to turn off the network adapter to save power. This can be a common reason for network disconnections.

    • Make sure that network discovery and file sharing are turned on. You can check these settings in the Network and Sharing Center.
[]Restart Router and Network Storage Devices:
    • Reboot your router and network storage devices to ensure they are functioning correctly.
    [
    ]Check for IP Address Conflicts:
    • Verify that there are no IP address conflicts on the network. Each device should have a unique IP address.
    []Disable IPv6:
    • Try disabling IPv6 on your network adapter to see if it resolves the connectivity issues.
    [
    ]Mapping Network Drives:
    • Instead of using the default Windows network drive setup, try mapping the network drives manually using specific drive letters. This can sometimes provide more stability.
    []Network Troubleshooter:
    • Run the built-in Windows Network Troubleshooter to diagnose and fix common network connectivity issues.
    [
    ]Firewall and Antivirus Software:
    • Temporarily disable the firewall and antivirus software on your Windows 7 PC to see if they are causing the network disconnections.

      Additional Considerations:

    • Network Load:
    • Consider the network load during the times of disconnection. Heavy network traffic can sometimes lead to intermittent disconnections.
    • Event Viewer:
    • Check the Windows Event Viewer for any related network errors or warnings that could provide more insight into the issue. By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the network drive disconnection issue on your Windows 7 PC. If the problem persists, feel free to provide more details for further assistance.
