Hi,

New to the forums. I've been running Vista Professional on a low-end Acer desktop for about a year.

I installed the Win7 RC this weekend - trying to figure out whether I should buy the upgrade.

On the whole, everything went very smoothly. Seems like Windows Media Player has really improved, in particular - it plays my AAC files now!

I use the hibernate feature extensively so that the PC is not using much power while I'm at work.

Vista plays well with my Dell P660 monitor, which I love and have no plans to trade in any time soon.

Not so Windows 7, which changes the resolution every time the desktop wakes up to the point where I can't even get to my task bar.

Win7 does not seem to recognize the Dell P660 - it calls it a "generic PNP monitor" or some such thing. I have been able to change the resolution and text size nonetheless, and I can still get to my graphics card configuration dialog if need be.

I've seen on other forums that the change of resolution upon wake is a known bug in the Win7 RC and it has not been fixed in the RTM.

Any word on a possible fix?

If not, pity, because everything else went so well.

However, this is a showstopper for me. If it were just a cosmetic issue it would be one thing, but if the task bar won't even come up and I have to adjust resolution all the time to get to it - forget it.

No current plans to "upgrade" to a new monitor just to support a new OS. :-)

Any advice/commiseration/word on the street would be appreciated - thanks.

Welcome to the forums! It's great to hear about your experience with Windows 7 RC. It sounds like the transition has been smooth overall, except for the issue with the resolution changing every time your desktop wakes up. The problem you're facing with the resolution changing upon wake-up in Windows 7 is indeed a known issue, and unfortunately, it seems that this particular bug was not addressed in the final release of Windows 7. This can be frustrating, especially when it interferes with accessing essential parts of the interface like the taskbar. Since the Windows 7 RTM (Released to Manufacturing) version didn't fix this issue, there might not be an official patch or fix provided by Microsoft specifically for this problem. However...
However, there are a few things you can try to work around this problem: 1. Graphics Card Driver Update: Make sure you have the latest graphics card drivers installed. Sometimes, updated drivers can improve compatibility and performance. 2. Monitor Driver Installation: Try installing the specific monitor driver for your Dell P660 monitor. This might help Windows 7 recognize it correctly and handle the resolution changes better. 3. Power Options: You mentioned you use hibernate extensively. You could try adjusting the power options to see if changing settings related to display behavior on wake-up makes any difference. 4. Third-Party Utilities: There are third-party utilities available that can help manage display settings and resolutions. You might find one that can assist in retaining your preferred resolution settings. 5. Community Support: Check online forums and communities to see if other users have found workarounds or solutions to this issue. Sometimes, community support can offer unique fixes. While it's unfortunate that this issue is a showstopper for you, exploring these options might help alleviate the problem to some extent. If none of these solutions work, you might have to consider sticking with Vista or looking into alternative operating systems that better support your current hardware setup. If you need any further assistance or more information, feel free to ask!
