Hello, I need help:(

My Link Removed (specs listed there. i7, 8g ram, nVidia geforce 550m with Intel HD 3000 optimus) is BSODing right after logging in. It boots fine, and I type in my password, it shows me the desktop for a bit, and around that moment I get one of the BSODs attached.

It also BSODs in safe mode, but not right away. I login in safe mode, I see the desktop, it actually lets me do stuff for a short while. As I do stuff I get the BSOD.

It's a little different when I boot into safe mode with command prompt. I can get a lot done in the DOS window. I can also launch windowed applications from there, but as I use them I get the BSOD.

I'm suspecting it has something to do with gdi or whatever draws the ui controls. My laptop has nVidia optimus with Intel HD 3000 and AFAIK Intel is used during all of these BSODs. Intel is using the system ram for its video memory.

I reinstalled the Intel drivers. Tried couple of times and got a BSOD in the middle many times. Finally I saw the very end of the installation, after which I got a BSOD. Afterwards when I tried installing it said it could not install (perhaps because it was already installed).

I ran memtest86 the whole night (five passes) and there were no errors. I ran Video Memory Stress Test (VMST) (bootable and windows application) and it showed many many errors. However, I believe VMST may be wrong because I think it thinks I have 4gig video ram.

I read the instructions on Link Removed, and I used the tool to grab the minidumps. I'm attaching them here. Unfortunately, when I try to run either of RAMMon or CPU-Z I instantly get a BSOD almost right after I see the window, therefore I cannot provide those screenshots.

I suspected that it could be the RAMs (2 x 4g). I removed either ram stick by itself and nothing changed about the problem. I highly doubt that both rams broke at the same time.

I downloaded and used Knoppix live DVD, and nothing bad happened. I played extreme tuxracer for a while and everything was just fine. However, I believe in Linux nVidia card was being used but I wasn't sure.

Please let me know if you could help me diagnose this problem, and remember that I can do very little in safe mode before I get another BSOD. I'm quite capable and can follow high level advice. (Programmer, Phd in CS, etc.)

Thanks in advance.

Solution
I only identified the outdated drivers that were involved with the crash - not all outdated drivers. They are listed in the 3rdParty Driver output above. You do that by running the lmtsm command in the debugger (the scripts that I use will strip out the Windows drivers and only list the 3rd Party Drivers involved in the crash).
And, some drivers may be outdated, but they are all that are available. An example is this one:
**************************Sun Dec 30 23:58:34.982 2012 (UTC - 5:00)************************** intelppm.sys Mon Jul 13 19:19:25 2009 (4A5BC0FD)
Finally, there are also drivers associated with the OS that date as far back as 2006.

I suggest that you do normal updating through...
I would suspect memory issues - probably with the video card, but maybe with the CPU
Try these free diagnostics: Link Removed

Although you can't run the RAMMon or CPU-Z - maybe you can run the systeminfo report and the MSINFO32 report? Those are very helpful to me.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

If the above things don't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these directions: Link Removed

Ok I'll do what you said as soon as I can. Quick question: could you tell me how you identified the outdated drivers that I have? I want to learn so that in the future I always keep my drivers up-to-date.

I indeed was able to run systeminfo and msinfo32. I'm attaching those reports here now. Then, I'll look into updating some drivers.

Thank you for your time.

Attachments

I suggest that you do normal updating through the manufacturer's website until a problem occurs - then we update those that are related to the crashes.

Systeminfo doesn't show a network card installed on the system. Do you have any idea why this might be?

MSINFO32 shows a Realtek RTL8188CU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter (among many, many other networking devices). Win7 doesn't like these devices - especially when coupled with older (Vista era) drivers. Here's my rant on these devices:

I do not recommend using wireless USB devices. Especially in Win7/Win8 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7(and I suspect with Win8) - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7/Win8 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

Your C: drive is 421 gB and only has 14.63 gB free
To prevent performance problems it is suggested that you keep 15% free space on all drives. In this case it'd be about 60 gB free - so please free up 45 gB (FWIW - you can get away with 10% free space with only a limited performance decrease temporarily).

These device have problems:
Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad ACPI\SYN0733\4&934FBA5&0 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.

Security Processor Loader Driver ROOT\LEGACY_SPLDR\0000 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.

McAfee Inc. mfehidk ROOT\LEGACY_MFEHIDK\0000 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.
The first is your touchpad. Please:
- download a fresh copy of the touchpad drivers from the manufacturer's website
- uninstall the current touchpad drivers
- install the freshly downloaded drivers

The last is your McAfee. Please do this:
Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- download a free anti-virus for testing purposes: Link Removed
- un-install the McAfee from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of McAfee using this free tool: Link Removed (This link has changed a lot. If it doesn't work, search for McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool)
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free anti-virus, then check to ensure that the Windows Firewall is turned on.
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's
NOTE: NEVER run more than 1 anti-virus, firewall, Internet Security/Security Center application at the same time.

The middle one is a sign that there was/is an infection on your system that has caused damage to the OS. Please perform a couple of the free scans from here to ensure that your system is clean: Link Removed

As from above - if this doesn't fix the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these directions: Link Removed

Good luck!

Solution
Thank you so very much for all the analysis and information.

I indeed had an infection last year and I got it removed - or so I thought.

My touchpad was not working most of the time, even though I had removed the driver (not with the tool that you linked to, though) and reinstalled fresh drivers (tried many versions). Sometimes it would work and sometimes it would not. It was odd.

In the meantime I installed Windows 7 on an eSATA drive, installed both Intel and Nvidia display drivers on it, and didn't have any BSODs or any other issues. This gave me a sigh of relief that my issues could be software-related after all.

I think I'm about ready to give up on this Windows installation. I backed up the whole partition to this esata drive using DriveImage XML. I think I'll reinstall Windows - maybe Windows 8 if our school has copies for us.

Any advice on this fresh install? Should I try and mark bad sectors in my harddrive first? With which program?

One last question - I should prefer the manufacturers drivers over what Lenovo wants me to download since the drivers that Lenovo distributes are kind of old, right?

For example, here are the drivers that Lenovo wants me to install (this one there is for the Intel HD 3000 video card). Whereas here are the Intel's current drivers for the Intel HD 3000 and this one there seems to be for my system. Clearly the drivers in the Intel's website have a more recent date. Should I ignore drivers that are on Lenovo's website?

Thank you so much for your time. I really really appreciate it.

My suggestions for a clean install: Link Removed

I prefer newer drivers (from the device manufacturer) when fixing problems. I also use them on my own system (as I'm very familiar with it's construction). At work we use the PC manufacturer's drivers because it's quicker and easier. We find that the PC Manufacturer's generally will respond with newer drivers when they find problems with their products - but they still lag behind the device manufacturers in the time it takes to respond to these problems.

In short, yes - use the device manufacturer's drivers if at all possible. Just be sure that some added functionality that you require isn't missing. Sometimes the PC manufacturer's put a bit of "added value" into their drivers - and you may have come to rely on that added functionality.
