Hi all.

I am not originally a windows user, mainly use fedora 20 but on 2 of my laptops there are windows 8 and windows 7 installed. Originally I wanted to have access via ssh to them from my fedora machine. But keep getting disconnected than I tried connecting one windows 7 machine to one windows 8 machine via telnet but it would seam that as soon as the connection was established it gets terminated.

My question is does anybody have any idea why can I not connect via telnet from windows 7 to windows 8 or the other way around.

I tried turning off the firewalls, opening up port 23, telnet client and telnet server are up and running. And I can not seam to figure out what the problem is. The computers are all in LAN of course, going over the same switch.

If no one has any answers, I welcome all suggestion of alternative paths.

Thank you all for your time and effort.

Solution
It sounds like you're experiencing difficulties with establishing a Telnet connection between your Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines despite having the necessary configurations set up. Here are some troubleshooting steps and alternative suggestions you can consider:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Firewall Settings:
    • Ensure that the Windows Firewall or any third-party firewall software is disabled or has an exception rule allowing Telnet (port 23) traffic.
    []Telnet Client and Server Installation:
    • Confirm that the Telnet client and server features are correctly installed on both Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines.

    • Verify that the Telnet server service is running on the host machine you are trying to connect to.
    []Network Configuration:
    • Check the network configuration between the Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines. Ensure they are on the same subnet and can communicate with each other.
    [
    ]Connection Testing:
    • Test the Telnet connection using the IP address instead of hostname if you are facing DNS resolution issues.
  2. Telnet Command:
    • Use the Telnet command with the IP address and port explicitly stated (e.g., telnet ).

      Alternative Paths:

    • Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP):
      • Consider using RDP for remote access. Windows machines typically have Remote Desktop Services built-in.
    • SSH:
      • Instead of Telnet, you can use third-party SSH clients on Windows like PuTTY to establish secure remote connections.
    • Remote Desktop Software:
      • Utilize remote desktop software like TeamViewer, AnyDesk, or VNC for remote access.
    • Windows Remote Management (WinRM):
      • Enable WinRM on Windows machines for remote management using PowerShell.
    • Third-Party Tools:
      • Explore other remote administration tools like mRemoteNG, Remote Utilities, or Chrome Remote Desktop. By exploring these alternatives and carefully checking the settings and configurations as mentioned above, you should be able to establish a successful remote connection between your Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines. Let me know if you need further assistance or if you encounter any specific issues during the troubleshooting process.
