Microsoft has officially announced Windows 11 version 25H2, slated for release in the latter half of 2025. This update emphasizes a streamlined upgrade process, leveraging the same platform and servicing stack as version 24H2, ensuring a swift installation comparable to a standard cumulative update. Notably, the transition from 24H2 to 25H2 will not necessitate a full OS replacement, facilitating a more efficient update experience.
The 25H2 update introduces several enhancements aimed at improving user experience and system performance:
- Start Menu Redesign: The Start menu will feature a modernized layout that integrates Pinned apps, Recommendations, and the All Apps list into a single scrollable page. Users will have the option to disable the Recommendations section entirely, offering a cleaner interface focused on pinned or all apps.
- Taskbar Improvements: Users can opt for smaller app icons to optimize screen space. This setting can be adjusted via Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors, with options to display smaller icons always or only when the Taskbar is full.
- File Explorer Enhancements: Improvements include a new "New" entry in the context menu for creating folders directly from the navigation pane, a "Share with" submenu for content sharing with supported applications, and the ability to restore open tabs upon login, enhancing workflow continuity.
- AI-Driven Windows Search: Integration of Semantic Indexing will enhance search capabilities by utilizing Natural Language Processing (NLP), allowing users to perform searches using conversational language for more accurate and relevant results.
- System Information Accessibility: The "About" page in the Settings app will feature a new layout highlighting key hardware specifications, including storage, graphics card, installed memory, and processor details, providing users with easy access to essential system information.
The general availability of Windows 11 version 25H2 is anticipated in September or October 2025. Microsoft encourages users to stay current with monthly updates to ensure access to the latest features and security improvements.
