Windows 7 usb network interface+ unknown device

greetings all
have done clean install on freshly formatted drive ( win7 premium upgrade from amazon )
now unable to connect to internet
device manager shows:
..other devices:
- ? unknown device
- ? usb network interface

motherboard ms ms-7260
router bt home hub version 1.0

windows compatibility showed no problems after i updated various unrelated drivers- drivers were updated, working before win 7 install

tried re-installing all newest available drivers after win 7 install ( none avail for usb interface, router )

tried installing internet software from original bt disk- no success as incompatible, no updates available according to bt helpline staff- they had me checking, unchecking boxes, attempting to set up connections using win 7 network/sharing center- cant even get local network up.

tried clean install of vista after reformatting drive- same problem remains in device manager !
tried re- reinstalling win7 again ( you never know...)
no joy
all cables checked, router works on other vista computer with same cable.

suggestions appreciated

sorted- used an ethernet cable instead of old usb cable supplied- works fine now
