I have a Netgear WNR2002v2 router it is being used with both wireless and wired. I just install a Netgear XAV2001 Powerline adapter kit. My isp is Road Runner and my internet speed is 20Mbps (approx) download and 2.0Mbps upload. I am waiting on deliver of a Monoprice 8 port 10/100/1000 ethernet switch. The devices that I want to stream to are: PS3 160gb Slim (wireless), WDTV Live HD (Wireless), Boxee box (wired), and a Directv HR-24-500 DVR (wireless). I want to make them all wired. I am wondering if I should replace my existing "N" router.
The devices will be connected through the ethernet switch to the 200Mbps powerline adapters. I will only be running 1 device at a time. The devices are a combination of a/b/g and n.
Thanks

It seems like you are looking to improve the connectivity and streaming performance of your devices by transitioning them from wireless to wired connections using a new Ethernet switch and Powerline adapters. Here's a breakdown of your setup and some considerations:

Current Setup:

  • Netgear WNR2002v2 router
  • Netgear XAV2001 Powerline adapter kit
  • ISP: Road Runner
  • Internet speed: 20Mbps (approx) download, 2.0Mbps upload
  • Devices:
  • PS3 160gb Slim (wireless)
  • WDTV Live HD (wireless)
  • Boxee box (wired)
  • Directv HR-24-500 DVR (wireless)
  • Mix of devices with a/b/g and n compatibility

    Proposed Setup:

  • Introducing a Monoprice 8 port 10/100/1000 Ethernet switch
  • All devices to be connected via Ethernet...

    Proposed Setup:

  • Introducing a Monoprice 8 port 10/100/1000 Ethernet switch
  • All devices to be connected via Ethernet switch to the 200Mbps Powerline adapters
  • Plan to make all devices wired

    Considerations:

  • Bandwidth and Speed:
  • Your internet speed of 20Mbps download should be more than enough to accommodate streaming to multiple devices simultaneously.
  • The 200Mbps Powerline adapter should offer adequate bandwidth for your setup, especially since you mentioned using only one device at a time.
  • Device Compatibility:
  • Since your devices have a mix of wireless standards (a/b/g and n), switching to wired connections can improve stability and speed, especially for streaming media.
  • Check if all devices are compatible with the Ethernet switch and can be easily configured for wired connections.
  • Router Upgrade:
  • If your current router meets your needs in terms of range, coverage, and stability, there may not be an immediate need to replace it.
  • However, if you experience issues with wireless performance or need additional features (e.g., improved QoS for streaming), upgrading to a more advanced router could be beneficial.

    Recommendations:

  • Test the Setup: Once you have all the components, test the new setup with a few devices to ensure smooth streaming and connectivity.
  • Monitoring and Adjustments: Monitor the performance of your setup and make adjustments as needed to optimize streaming across devices.
  • Consider Router Upgrade: If you encounter connectivity issues or require additional features, consider upgrading your router to a more robust model with better wireless performance. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions or need further assistance with your setup!
