As of May 1, 2025, Windows 11 has achieved a significant milestone, capturing 43.72% of the Windows market share, according to Statcounter. This marks a notable increase of 1.03 percentage points in April 2025 alone. In contrast, Windows 10's share has declined to 52.94%, a decrease of 1.26 points during the same period. Over the past year, Windows 11's market presence has grown by 17.53 points, while Windows 10 has seen a reduction of 16.95 points.
The United States exemplifies this trend, with Windows 11 surpassing Windows 10 to become the leading desktop operating system. Currently, Windows 11 holds 56.43% of the market, compared to Windows 10's 41.04%. Similar patterns are observed in the United Kingdom and Canada.
Despite the overall upward trajectory, certain regions exhibit slower adoption rates. In Ukraine, for instance, Windows 11 accounts for only 26.7% of the market, while Windows 10 maintains a dominant 68.55% share.
Older versions of Windows continue to have a presence, albeit minimal. Windows 7 holds 2.4% of the market, Windows XP stands at 0.38%, and Windows 8.1 is at 0.28%.
The approaching end of support for Windows 10 later this year is likely influencing users to transition to Windows 11. Microsoft's Extended Security Update program aims to assist users during this period, ensuring continued security and support.
In summary, Windows 11's adoption is accelerating globally, with significant gains in market share, particularly in countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. However, regional disparities persist, and older Windows versions still retain a small user base. The impending end of support for Windows 10 is expected to further drive the shift towards Windows 11.
