Windows 11 is on the verge of becoming the most widely used desktop operating system, closely trailing Windows 10. According to StatCounter's June 2025 report, Windows 11's market share increased by 4.44% last month, rising from 43.22% to 47.66%. In contrast, Windows 10's share declined from 53.19% to 49.03%, a 4.16% drop. This leaves a mere 1.4% gap between the two operating systems, suggesting that Windows 11 could surpass Windows 10 as early as next month.
This shift is not unexpected. With Windows 10 approaching its End of Life in October 2025, Microsoft has been actively encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 11. Despite a slower initial adoption rate, Windows 11 has already become the leading OS on gaming platforms like Steam. While StatCounter's figures don't guarantee a trend, they strongly indicate that Windows 11 is on track to take the lead.
Meanwhile, Windows 7 still holds 2.21% of the desktop market, a figure that has remained relatively stable this year, indicating continued loyalty among some users to the now-retired OS. However, Windows 10 may not disappear quickly. Microsoft is offering a paid support extension in 2026, which could slow the decline of its user base.
The rapid adoption of Windows 11 can be attributed to several factors. Microsoft's persistent reminders about Windows 10's impending end-of-life have prompted many users to upgrade. Additionally, Windows 11 offers a suite of improvements, including a revamped user interface, enhanced performance optimizations, and fortified cybersecurity measures, making it an attractive option for both individual users and large organizations.
However, some users remain hesitant to upgrade due to concerns over telemetry, online features that some believe compromise privacy, and the strict TPM 2.0 requirement. These factors have deterred some from making the switch, contributing to the continued presence of Windows 10 in the market.
In conclusion, Windows 11 is poised to become the dominant desktop operating system, with its market share rapidly approaching that of Windows 10. While some users remain loyal to older versions, the combination of Microsoft's upgrade initiatives and the enhanced features of Windows 11 are driving a significant shift in the OS landscape.
