I've been running windows 7 successfully in a home network ( wirless ). All of my desktops/laptops have been running great wirelessly with the exception of one problem-child...:) This particular desktop has a WN311B adapter and it consistantly connects to a unsecured wireless network in my neighborhood that has almost no signal strength. ( it's a belkin setup of some type ) I have a Netgear WNR3500 Wireless -N Router which is only 25 ft. away. I also had the same issue when I was using a Linksys WRT54G. I have my home network set up as default network and to connect to it automatically, yet every time Windows 7 is started up, this particular PC connects to the unknown Belkin network and I have to manually disconnect and then connect to my network. Pain in the Buttocks!

Is there a way within Windows 7 to disable the automatic detection of wireless networks? That way I could have it ONLY connect to my network?

Thanks!

Solution
To address the issue of your Windows 7 PC automatically connecting to an unwanted wireless network instead of your home network, you can adjust the wireless network settings to prioritize your network over others. Here's how you can disable the automatic detection of wireless networks in Windows 7: 1. Manage Wireless Networks: - Click on the wireless network icon in the system tray (typically located in the lower right corner of the screen). - Right-click on the network icon and select "Open Network and Sharing Center." - In the Network and Sharing Center window, locate and click on "Manage wireless networks" on the left-hand side. 2. Adjust Network Priority: - You should see a list of wireless networks that your PC has...

Adjust Network Priority: - You should see a list of wireless networks that your PC has connected to before. Find the unwanted network (Belkin network) in the list. - Right-click on the unwanted network and select "Remove network." - This action removes the unwanted network from the list of preferred networks, helping your computer to stay focused on connecting to your home network. 3. Set Preferred Network: - After removing the unwanted network, you can also set your home network as the preferred network. - Click on "Add" in the Manage Wireless Networks window and manually add your home network. Make sure to check the box that says "Connect automatically." 4. Alternative Method: - If you prefer a more direct approach, you can configure your wireless adapter's settings to avoid connecting to unwanted networks. - Go to "Device Manager" by right-clicking on "Computer" and selecting "Manage." In the Device Manager window, find your wireless adapter under "Network adapters." - Right-click on your wireless adapter, select "Properties," and navigate to the "Advanced" tab. - Look for an option related to scanning for wireless networks or a similar setting. You might find options like "Roaming sensitivity" or "Preferred network", which you can adjust to prioritize your home network. By following these steps, you can ensure that your Windows 7 PC prioritizes and connects to your home network without automatically detecting and connecting to unwanted networks. This should help alleviate the frustration of having to manually switch networks every time you start up your PC.
