For the past couple of months, the "new" version of the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool has been identified as an automatic update and then installs successfully each month. However, within minutues the automatic update tool tells me there is a new update to install and it lists the "previous" month Malicious Software Removal Tool update. Eventually this seems to correct itself somehow, but I am not sure how.

Example, I just got recent updates and the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2011 was installed successfully, but now this is a automatic update icon in the system tray telling me that "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - December 2010 (KB890830)" is ready to be installed.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It seems like you are experiencing a recurring issue with the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool being identified as an automatic update each month even after it has been successfully installed. This situation can be frustrating, but there are a few possible reasons and solutions for this behavior:

Possible Causes and Solutions:

  1. Update Installation Failure:
    • Sometimes, the update installation can fail silently, leading to the system perceiving it as pending even after seemingly successful installation. In such cases, checking the update history can provide insights.
    []Update Detection Issue:
    • The Windows Update system may have difficulties recognizing that the update has already been installed. This can occur due to corrupted update files or settings. Running Windows Update troubleshooter could help resolve this.
    [
    ]Update Loop Glitch:
    • It's possible that a glitch in the update process is causing the tool to keep prompting to install an older version. Performing a clean boot and then running Windows Update again might help break the loop.

      Steps to Resolve the Issue:

    []Check Update History:
    • Check the Windows Update history to see if the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool updates are listed as successfully installed or if there are any error codes associated with the installation.
    [
    ]Run Windows Update Troubleshooter:
    • Use the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter to automatically detect and resolve common update-related issues.
    []Perform a Clean Boot:
    • Perform a clean boot by disabling all startup programs and non-Microsoft services before running Windows Update again. This can help isolate any third-party software conflicts affecting the update process.
    [
    ]Manually Install the Latest Update:
    • If the issue persists, you can manually download and install the latest version of the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool from the Microsoft Download Center.
  2. Check for System File Corruption:
    • Use the System File Checker tool (sfc /scannow) to check for and repair corrupted system files that may be affecting the update process.

      Follow-Up:

After trying these steps, monitor the Windows Update process to see if the issue persists. If it does, further investigation may be needed to identify the root cause of this recurring update notification problem. Let me know if you need more detailed steps or assistance with any of these solutions!
