OS - Windows 7 64bit Version 6.1 (Build 7600
CPU - AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
RAM - 8GB Dual Channel DDR2 @ 333MHz
MB - ASUSTek M4N78 PRO
AntiVirus - Microsoft Securities Essentials

I just installed another 4 Gigs of RAM and now my Windows Update is not working. I don't know if they are related, but the failure was apparent immediately after the upgrade.
When I ran Windows Update it would say that "windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running" I restarted the system to no avail. I checked msconfig and it was running so I disabled it then re-enabled it. Here is a screen shot of the current status.
msconfig.png
As you can see, it is running. My Windows Update is stuck in this screen:
WinUpdate.png
To show that this is a new occurrence, here is a screen shot of installed updates:
WinUpdates.png
My MSSE currently is telling me this:
MSE_problems.png
Which scared me so I ran the Malicious Software Removal Tool (full scan) which gave me no hits. Searching the sites, it was recommended that I try HijackThis, so I have included the logfile here as well.

If there is any way to fix this without reinstalling Windows, I would be eternally grateful.
Thanks much!

Since it is your system, do you know what everything listed is?

You seem to show quite a few "file Missing" entries. Have you run a system file check lately? Perhaps open an administrative command prompt and type sfc /scannow then let it work to see if you files need repairing, if it can.

Have you been running anything on your system to clean it, or can you think of another reason the files might be missing, if they are?

It appears you haven't had an update in almost a month. Is that your setting or did your updates stop working that far back?

The following looks a little strange, but if some system files are missing, you may see some strange things.

After we check your system files, maybe we can go into your WindowsUpdate.log or find one of the Fix Windows Update sites. There is an update troubleshooter in the Control Panel.

Here is the result of the sfc /scannow:

I am not sure where else you are talking about. I used the update troubleshooter in Control Panel:

The result after reboot is this:

I look forward to your other options.
I have had automatic updates set, I am not sure why it has been almost a month since I have had updates.

I just ran a HijackThis scan on my system and it shows the same type of files missing, so that does not mean much.

There are two files that might be useful in finding a Windows Update problem. WindowsUpdate.log in the Windows directory and ReportingEvents.log in the Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.

You might open the WindowsUpdate.log and copy the last few days of events into a text file and attach, along with the ReportingEvents.log file and .zip them together.

Maybe I can tell from the abreviated log what might be going on or at least get some kind of error message. It would be nice to have the entire WindowsUpdate.log, but it gets fairly large, and I don't think you could send it in a Private Message.

A good network connection seems to be essential for Windows Update. Have you modified your connection recently? Maybe it is related to the Nvidia .dll file mentioned in the Winsock. but I am not even sure what that really means. More research seems to be necessary.

Edit: Well, time has passed and I found the following on Link Removed due to 404 Error. Shows the same entries as you regarding nvlsp.dll

Remove the NVIDIA Firewall (or the forceware network manager, same thing). It's a very, very broken firewall.

From one of the logs, it seems that 2 problems might be involved. The first is Windows Update cannot write to a log file. If you have installed another firewall or anti-virus, it might be blocking the access to possibly the Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder. If you can exempt that folder for being scanned, you might try that. Did you consider the Nvidia nForce firewall, or whatever the indicated file might be related to?

The second indication is that your memory might be full for which one suggestion was to reboot your system. If you put your system to sleep mostly and never reboot, it might be involved.

The problems seemed to start around June 9th or 10th. Do you have 8 updates hidden?

I will check the WindowsUpdate.log next to see if I can link the problems in the two files.

I have exempted the folders from being scanned by Microsoft Securities Essentials. As to nVidia nForce, that is the driver for my motherboard according to nVidia. I have removed the ForceWare Network Access Manager per your advice and there has been no change.
I have rebooted my computer many times over the last few weeks, including just now to remove the ForceWare Network Access Manager
I have included a screenshot of my computer failing to update with my resource monitor showing my memory usage MemoryUpdates.jpg
as well as MSSE update failing and showing network activity.
SecurityEssentialsOnline.jpg

How do I check to see if I "have 8 updates hidden" I have not done anything to hide them for whatever that is worth

The last thing I might suggest is it seems the last update on the ReportEvents.log is an install for a Microsoft Security Essentials Definition. The KB number is KB2310138 and Def. 1.105.1625.0 after which, you get the c80001fe (unable to write to log file) and the c80003f3 (computer out of memory).

I cannot tell what updates are failing after that. Maybe examining your WindowsUpdate.log on 2011-06-10 05:58:42 might give some clues, or the day prior at 3 pm.

But right now, I will have to suggest the MSE update has stopped Windows Update from accessing the logs it needs. You might try changing some of the settings or turn off Real Time Protection. But I will suggest you remove the last update mentioned above. Since I don't think you can uninstall an MSE update, restoring your system back before 6/10 and not let that update occur.

If you cannot restore, possibly removing and reinstalling MSE might help. Do not let the same update install until you are ready for it. It might have just been a glitch, or it may be conflicting with something on your system, or possibly even changed some of your settings.

Hopefully this will fix your problem, but I will continue to check for other issues. If you want to upload your WindowsUpdate.log from June 8-12, I could check it. Otherwise, if I find anything else I will post back, but this is my best guess right now.

I couldn't find that KB file.
I did uninstall and reinstall MSE however and was able to update it and am now running a full scan on my system.
The memory issue is baffling me as I have shut down almost everything and tried to run Microsoft Update with the same message. I can't believe that it is using 8GB of memory to run Update.
Here is my full Windows Update log.

Thank you for keeping with me. I don't want to have to do a fresh install. If for no other reason than to avoid a Macophile from saying "I told you so"

I am still working on this so don't decide to reinstall. Before you do that there is a Link Removed - Invalid URL to refresh the entire SoftwareDistribution folder that might correct some problems.

The memory errors may not be just for your system memory, but possibly a portion set aside for the update process and the problems are causing it to overflow.

There are two updates that have been unable to install since the beginning of your Update log. All I have are the numbers and I cannot find references to them except for one in German. Maybe you can find something. They keep saying they were not allowed to download, then when they did try to download, there was an error. In the log, a KB update number is translated into a GUID number. The update may have one or more sections which get different GUID numbers, so these numbers may be primary or secondary, I cannot tell and they are not in the Windows Update Catalog.

If you decide to reinstall, you know about the repair install where you can keep all your settings?

It appears this did the trick. Thanks for sticking with me. I definitely didn't want to re-install as this would have been twice in a month.
