It seems like you're experiencing issues with your wireless adapter on your Windows 7 desktop not picking up signals from your router, particularly when trying to connect to your XP computer downstairs. Here are a few troubleshooting steps that might help resolve the issue: 1. Check Wireless Adapter Compatibility: - Ensure that your wireless adapter is compatible with Windows 7. You can do this by checking the manufacturer's website for any driver updates or compatibility information. 2. Update Wireless Adapter Drivers: - Update the drivers for your wireless adapter. Outdated drivers can cause connectivity issues. Visit the manufacturer's website to download and install the latest drivers for Windows 7. 3. Router Compatibility: - Verify that your router, the WRT54G, is compatible with Windows 7. Check if there are any firmware updates available for the router that might improve compatibility with Windows 7. 4. Network Configuration: - Double-check your network configuration settings on both the Windows 7 desktop and the XP computer to ensure they are on the same network and subnet. Make sure the network settings (IP address, subnet mask, default gateway) are correctly configured. 5. Signal Interference: - Check for any sources of signal interference that might affect the wireless connection between the router and your Windows 7 desktop. Avoid placing devices like cordless phones, microwaves, or other electronics near the router or desktop. 6. Network Troubleshooter: - Use the built-in Network Troubleshooter in Windows 7 to diagnose and repair network connectivity issues. You can access this tool by right-clicking on the network icon in the system tray and selecting "Troubleshoot problems." 7. Security Settings: - Ensure that the security settings on your router (WEP, WPA, WPA2) match the security settings configured on your Windows 7 desktop. Incorrect security settings can prevent a successful connection. 8. Signal Strength: - Check the signal strength on your Windows 7 desktop. If the signal is weak, consider repositioning the router or using a Wi-Fi extender to improve connectivity. Try these steps to see if they help resolve the connection issue between your Windows 7 desktop and the XP computer downstairs.
