Windows 7 a couple of silly ones

first I have lost the thumbnail pictures and only get icons in the directories

second every now any then internet explore shows a small screen and states closing down this then reopes almost straight away
or the screen flashes

not a real great problem but a distraction

? Do you have this option on or off:

Control Panel > Folder Options > Uncheck "Always show icons, never thumbnails"

There can be many causes of that, Link Removed - Invalid URL could tell more.

Solution
the thumbnails are missing in the personalization pages in the control
this is nuts
any help would be appreciated
something has turned them off and the normal way is not working
