Windows 7 BSOD found, still no clue what the cause might be

Senior Member
Hallo,

yesterday I started a thread in the same forum to be able to see the BSOD long enough to be able to read the BSOD but today another BSOD happened and I don`t have a single clue as what might cause it... Attached are both the BSOD report of yesterday and one from today
Any help would be appreciated and if more information is required please let me know.

ps. I don`t know if it is related but sometimes without obvious cause my pc freezes for a few seconds before going on as normal

I'm late for work.
Start with the stuff I've inserted below.
Post back to bump this topic (so I'll remember to look at the rest of the reports).
Good luck!

Un-install Daemon Tools.
Run these free hardware diagnostics: Initial Hardware Diagnostics

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Lets start with mentioning what I have and have not done yet and the questions I have;
Speedfan + Deamon tools are deinstalled and thus shouldn`t bother the pc anymore

I don`t really know what that tages does, but I don`t seem to be able to update it, it only gives me the remove option with warning that other programs might not work anymore if removed... My cdrom/dvddrive is broken (as in doesn`t read discs anymore, unrelated I think) so I don`t need the program for that task anymore but what else might be affected, any advice?

Asus gave me a lot of possible downloads after self detect but none were called PCprobe utiliy so I am unclear about this point as well...

Still working on the HP driver issue but the auto product detect there seems to get stuck at 98% every single time using chrome and when I use the auto detect in IE it doesn`t detect hp-products and I did install what I could find as an updated driver but I have no clue if the one installed is what you meant and if it was necesarry/succesfull since I have a logitech keyboard and HP didn`t detect any HP hardware.

About the hardware diagnostics you offer, as I already mentioned I don`t have a working cd/dvd drive and hadn`t the time to do them, but I did test some of those in different ways when removing a virus not two weeks ago...

The drives were tested using western digital data lifeguard diagnostics and all passed the tests and to remove the virus(xtrat.a) I used this guide Malware Removal Guide for Windows - Select Real Security, succesfully I think so I shouldn`t have any problems related to malware.

So all in all not really a succesfull afternoon on my part and I would like to know if any of the test you recommend can be done from an USB stick (I installed windows 7 from one of those) but I read at your site that you can`t just copy the ISO to a disk, is this true for an USB stick as well?

And just to be sure and since I had another BSOD, this time when watching something on youtube, I attached another report

Actually you've done quite well considering that I didn't have the time to proof read my post.

Don't worry about the Asus utilities, they're not usually a concern at this stage of the analysis. If they continue to appear in the memory dumps we can give instructions on how to safely remove them (but we're not at that point yet)

You can safely remove the Tages program. If it impacts something on the system, you can just reinstall that something in order to get it back.

The broken CD/DVD drive can be causing issues. Please disconnect the power cable and the data cable from it.

If the hard drive passed the Western Digital test - that's all that we need to know about that.

As for the malware removal - did it find anything and remove it, or was the system clean and didn't need any removals?

You can use this free tool to load and run ISO's from a USB drive: YUMI - Multiboot USB Creator (Windows) | USB Pen Drive Linux
I'm sorry, but I can't offer any advice on how to use it (since I haven't used it in a long, long time). But it will allow you to copy an ISO to your USB drive and then select it to boot from.

Your hard drives have less than 15% free space on them. They need this amount of free space for optimum performance (Windows does stuff in the background with that free space). You can get away with less, but the performance is decreased.

These 2 devices have problems:
Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_4364&SUBSYS_81F81043&REV_12\4&18BA0AA4&0&00E5 Dit apparaat is uitgeschakeld.

ASInsHelp ROOT\LEGACY_ASINSHELP\0000 Dit apparaat is niet aanwezig, het werkt niet correct of heeft niet alle benodigde stuurprogramma's geïnstalleerd.
Although my Dutch isn't very good (thank goodness for Google translator!) - the first device appears disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why is it disabled? The second device is not working/present (it's part of the Asus programs that you were looking for).

The second device is most likely associated with your Asus AIBooster software. Please un-install that and see if it removes the problem entry from the MSINFO32 report

Please don't use CCleaner to clean anything while we're troubleshooting - it destroys the reports that we need.

I notice that there is cracked software listed in your program groups. We do not assist with cracked software, and probably can't fix problems associated with cracked software (because the crack, by it's nature, bypasses the usual functioning that we test for). I strongly suggest removing it from your system before we proceed.

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Win7 systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): [DEL] DuplexSecure - FAQ [/DEL] Link broken as of 21 Jul 2012
New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link: Disc-Tools.com
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

This memory dump seems essentially the same as the previous one. I suspect that it occurred before removing Daemon Tools and Speedfan. If not, please post back as the drivers from both are still in the memory dump.

Good luck!

Don't worry about these, I put them here so I have a visible record of what needs doing.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Ok, thanks, I de-installed the tages program and reinstalled it afterwards, to be safe in case other programs start to crash, I didn`t find any malware, device 1 should be on now (don`t now exactly what it does or why it was off but it is on now) device 2 doesn`t show in device management so I don`t know where to turn it on
I didn`t (yet) disconnect the cd/dvd drive and I don`t really see how that could have been causing my problems since it has been broken for more than a year by now.
I did notice that the seemingly random freezes almost only occur when flash is active somewhere or when using VLC, is there something that could be done about that?
I will post a new report once/hopefully if another BSOD occurs

Try:
updating your flash player to the latest version.
updating your graphics driver ( and possibly directx too )

to add on to usasma's helpful posts above:
1: It looks to me as though you've overclocked your system (need confirmation on this, but it says so in the dmp analysis)
2: Your BIOS looks out of date (pre 2008). Try updating it to the latest version through your motherboard manufacturer's site (IMO, if the company/manufacturer stopped giving out BIOS updates it's usually time to get a new computer).
3: You have speedfan installed - I'm not sure why you'd have this program. It simply changes the speed at which your computer fans spin at - changing the settings too low could cause parts of your computer to overheat, too high and your power supply might not be able to handle it.

I don`t really understand it all but I did find out what motherboard I have and the version of BIOS on it(Asus P5k-VM, bios 0401) but also found that there are 5 newer updates, I don`t know if they are cumulative so should I download them all and install them in order of age(oldest first) or is it enough if I download the latest and install that one?

I got speedfan cause my computer started turning itself off a couple of years back and I checked if it was caused by the temperature which was indeed alarmingly high, even when not doing anything. I cleaned the pc and that solved it but never needed the space it occupied so it is still installed.

And I don`t know exactly what overclocking is and if it happened it wasn`t on purpose...

After nearly a week without I got a BSOD again today(it might be because of deamon tools this time...) But I still have the random freezes although they occur less now that I reinstalled some programs, like my browser. But they still occur maybe 4-5 times a day with quite often no disturbance to music... on youtube the screen will freeze but the music will go on but when I listen to music though WMP it often does stop.

As well as another problem that has been occuring than most often happens right after a freeze is that for a few seconds windows resets itself to the standard settings which is visible cause my taskbar changes color for a few seconds and most disturbingly my antivirus program (microsoft security essentials) turns itself off... and although the other things change back to how they where the security has to be started manually... virus scan turns out clean

Attached is another report

You have a keyboard driver that dates from 2000 (msikbd.sys). It is most likely NOT compatible with Win7 and must be removed.
Also, you have an HP keyboard (PS2.sys) that dates from 2001. It is most likely NOT compatible with Win7 and must be removed.

The Daemon Tools driver is present in the memory dump - so please remove it using the previous instructions. Then monitor to see if you get any further BSOD's.

Finally, there are other possibilities for problems - so we must fix the above issues before proceeding.

The 2 most likely issues are:
- memory timing/setting/voltage issues (common with the Asus P5 series of mobos)
- hardware issues that may require further testing.

Just FYI, we troubleshoot in this order:
- we try to rule out all 3rd party (non-Microsft) drivers that have problems (the most common cause)
- then we try to rule out hardware problems (which include unidentified compatibility issues/low-level drivers/and malware)
- then we try to rule out Windows problems (the least likely cause)

You have a keyboard driver that dates from 2000 (msikbd.sys). It is most likely NOT compatible with Win7 and must be removed.
Also, you have an HP keyboard (PS2.sys) that dates from 2001. It is most likely NOT compatible with Win7 and must be removed.

Where can I find these drivers to remove and do I need new version of them or just remove them? Since they don`t have a function that I can think off (since as mentioned before I have a logitech keyboard..)
BTW. Are there programs able to stable handle ISO`s since the two programs that can handle them and that I know off are both mentioned as unstable by you or is that kind of program by default unstable?

I would suggest first trying to find keyboard programs (other than Logitech) in Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then I would try locating them in Device Manager and un-installing them by right clicking on them and selecting "un-install"

If that doesn't work, post back and we'll see about safely removing them manually.

I have never had need of the sort of program that Daemon Tools is - so I have no direct knowledge about it. I've heard of Virtual Clone CD but am not familiar with it's abilities.

If you find an adequate replacement, please post back so we can advise others of this (it's not the first time that this question has been asked). Thanks!

I can`t find either of them with control panel and only the PS2 one with device manager which shows no drivers for my current keyboard, only the HP PS2 KEyboard (2k-20), do I still delete it? Since it appears it is the only keyboard driver I have...

Update;
Today my windows explorer had an error and had to restart(not the pc just explorer), I don`t know if it is connected or not but now you know of it.
Further I have tested Virtual CloneDrive in search for a stable replacement for deamon tools and so far so good.
I don`t know if it is the same as you recommended (name is quite similair) but this one is a user favorite at softonic(that is how I found it).

There is a chance that removing the drivers will cause the system to stop operating correctly - that's why I suggest the following procedure. It will let you restore the system to the way it was before you removed the drivers and will let the system boot. But, in most cases, Windows is smart enough to automatically substitute default drivers to let the keyboard work.

To remove these drivers safely:

1. Create a Restore Point using System Restore
2. Create a Repair disc by going to Start...All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc
3. Test the System Repair disc to make sure that you can get to the System Restore entry when you boot from the disk (you may also want to try actually using System Restore to make sure that it works)
4. Download this free program (Autoruns) and use it to disable any instances of PS2.sys that are starting (DO NOT DELETE - only disabled by removing the checkmark in the left hand column)
5. Check in Device Manager (to include showing hidden devices from the View menu item) and ensure that any instances of PS2.sys are "Un-installed" (DO NOT DISABLE THESE).
6. Check in the Services applet (services.msc) to be sure any instances of PS2.sys are disabled.
7. Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename the PS2.sys driver to PS2.BAD

In the event that the system doesn't boot:

1. Boot from the System Repair disc and use the Command Prompt option to rename PS2.BAD to PS2.sys
2. Boot from the System Repair disc and use the System Restore option to restore the system to a point before the changes were made.

If all that works for the PS2.sys file (try several reboots), then do the same for the msikbd.sys entry.

Good luck!

I don`t really understand everything so here are some questions;
1. Not a problem
2. As mentioned I don`t have a working cd/dvd drive, does this work with USB as well?
3. By testing you mean I have to boot from disk, care to explain how? and how do I check if the system is restored since I didn`t change anything after making the restore point?
4. Not a problem
5. Can do
6. Checked it to be sure how to find it and PS2.sys wasn`t in the extended or standard list...
7. can do

And an overall question just for my understanding of it all,
I do step 1 till 6 just to make sure it is not in use somewhere and to be able to restore it if step 7 goes wrong, right?
And I don`t delete anything?

The first 6 steps are both to ensure it's not in use somewhere - and to ensure that you don't get errors when/if it attempts to load and can't find it. This is by no means a comprehensive list of startup locations - but is the most common.

If Step 7 goes wrong, you may not be able to boot to Windows - so that's why all of the rest is being done (to prepare the system so you can 1) re-rename the driver from .BAD to .sys and 2) to reset the other settings that you may have changed - which are contained in the registry).

Since you don't have a CD/DVD drive, I'd suggest using YUMI (as I discussed previously). I've sent you a PM in order to help you out. Please do not share the contents of the PM with anyone.

If you set a system restore point, then you can restore the system to it - even if it was only a short while ago. If the process works, you'll get a message that it was successful - even if you can't see that anything has changed (or, you can make another change just to see if it does change it).

According to the output of lm vm in WinDbg, both drivers are located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers:

I've only seen issues in the past with Filter drivers for CD/DVD drives - but can't recall if I've ever tried this on keyboard drivers. Hence the cautious approach.

Good luck!

When I finally found the time to look at what needed to be done I have trouble with step 1 and 2 already.
Step 1; I can`t find it, only a back-up option which isn`t what you mean, I think, and step 2 doesn`t work since the computer needs a cd/dvd drive..(a virtual one isn`t enough...)

So could you be more specific about where the restore points can be made? And am I wrong in presumming the file that you send me could stand in for what I need to create at point 2?

Didn`t have time for a fix but I did have a BSOD again, so here is the report, sunday will be the day that I hopefully will get further along with the fixing

I haven't gone back and reviewed the previous posts, so this may duplicate some of my previous suggestions:

You've still gotta update a bunch of older drivers - even if you don't consider the msikbd.sys and PS2.sys drivers.
The most important one's are your Audio, Video, and networking drivers - all of which date from 2009.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

It is a long time since the last update but here is one again; BSOD still happening even at really random moments (just after closing my browser for example), my pc still is strange (I had to reinstall MS office since word didn`t open anymore) and the proposed solutions seem impossible on my pc; the PS2 driver can`t be deinstalled in device manager(that requires a restart which automaticly reinstalls it and makes a new entry in autoruns), I am not able to find the other driver msikbd in device manager and neither of the drivers show up in services... YUMI in combination with the file you send worked excellent but the drivers are unfortunately still there, I updated a lot of drivers using Slimdrivers a freeware program and the scan from it can`t detect any out of date drivers anymore, so in case that there are please let me know as well as what can be done next

Edit: now with attachement
