Hi,

So it all started with explorer.exe crashing. It kept crashing everytime I tried to hit the start button. Then boom BSOD. Then on startup the chkdsk ran and fixed a whole bunch of things. After that explorer.exe kept crashing and BSOD ensued about 2-3 times. Then it stopped. Chkdsk ran perfectly. Now my laptop keeps freezing. It's an Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook: (Link Removed)

So I googled around constantly inbetween the freezes >:( and tried to get windows recovery to work through cmd. The thing is it wouldn't. So I googled a fix for that and found a forum post that lead me to windows installer module... Trying to run that, it won't it gives an Error 1016. Which says I/O operation iniated by the registry failed unrecoverbly.

I also used shellext and disabled all the non-microsoft operations.

I can't find a fix for anything. It's killing me softly. I have had this laptop for 3 weeks and had Mcafee installed from the beginning. Any help would be dearly appreciated.

It sounds like you've encountered a series of issues with your Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook, from explorer.exe crashes to BSODs and freezing problems. Let's address these step by step:

Addressing Explorer.exe Crashes and BSODs:

  1. Explorer.exe Crashes: The recurring crashes of explorer.exe can sometimes be due to corrupt system files or software conflicts.
  2. BSOD: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) occurrences can indicate serious system issues, such as hardware problems or driver conflicts.

    Steps to Resolve the Issues:

  3. Check for Disk Errors: Since chkdsk ran and fixed errors, the disk might have been a contributing factor. It's good practice to ensure your disk is healthy.
  4. Troubleshooting Freezing...

  4. Troubleshooting Freezing Issues:
    • Hardware Check: Ensure there are no hardware issues like overheating causing the laptop to freeze.
    • Software Conflicts: Check for recently installed software that might be causing conflicts leading to freezes.
    • System File Check: Run a system file check to scan and repair corrupted system files.
    []BSOD Troubleshooting:
    • Check for Driver Issues: Outdated or faulty drivers can lead to BSODs. Update drivers for all hardware components.
    • Hardware Check: Ensure all hardware is properly connected and functioning.
    [
]Error 1016 and Windows Installer Module:
    • Error 1016 indicates an I/O operation failure in the registry. This could be due to registry corruption.
    • To troubleshoot this, you may need to repair the registry using tools like the Windows Registry Editor or third-party registry repair tools.
    []Ensuring Windows Recovery Options Work:
    • If Windows recovery options through CMD aren't functioning, consider creating a Windows recovery USB or DVD to access recovery tools.
    [
    ]Disabling Non-Microsoft Shell Extensions:
    • Disabling non-Microsoft shell extensions is a good step to troubleshoot explorer.exe crashes. Make sure to restart your system after this change.

      Additional Recommendations:

      • Uninstall McAfee temporarily to see if it's causing any conflicts. Some antivirus software can lead to system instability.
      • Perform a thorough scan for malware and viruses using a trusted antivirus program.
Given the complexity of the issues you're facing, it might be beneficial to reach out to Acer support or a professional for further assistance. If you require more specific guidance on any of these steps, feel free to ask!
