All of my music resides in iTunes library, where it is all bagged and tagged, and works perfectly. Although not really tagged, as I am using wav files, iTunes nonetheless is able to keep everything in order. The prob getting wmp/wmc to pick it up is that everything comes up jumbled, like one album will have numerous covers, with one or more songs to it, or it just says unknown. Although it would be a PITA, there is a place to edit this information in Explorer, you know, in the bottom bar, but it doesn't allow for editing, permissions not allowed. What purpose does this editable bar serve, if you can't edit it? I've researched this before with no luck, but I'd really like to get at my music through WMC.

Any help, organizing music for WMC/WMP?

Thanks,
rlr

Solution
To organize your music for Windows Media Center (WMC) or Windows Media Player (WMP) and ensure that it displays correctly, you may need to address the metadata of your WAV files. Here are some steps you can take to organize your music effectively:

1. Manage Metadata:

  • Metadata Tags: WAV files typically do not support embedded metadata tags like MP3 files. To resolve this, you can convert your WAV files to a format that supports metadata tagging, such as MP3 or FLAC. This will help WMP/WMC to display your music collection more accurately.
  • Metadata Editing Tools: You can use third-party tools like Mp3tag or MusicBrainz Picard to manually edit the metadata of your music files.

    2. Organize File Structure:

  • Folder Structure: Ensure that your music files are organized in a clear folder structure. For example, have separate folders for each album with the correct track order.

    3. Library Management:

  • Library Refresh: After organizing your music files, refresh the library in WMP/WMC to ensure that the changes are reflected.
  • Add Library Locations: Make sure that you have added the correct folders where your music is stored to the library in WMP/WMC.

    4. Additional Tips:

  • File Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to edit the metadata of your music files.
  • Backup: Before making any changes, it's always a good idea to backup your music library to prevent any accidental loss of data.

    Editable Bar in Explorer:

  • The editable bar at the bottom in Windows Explorer allows you to view and edit file properties such as name, date modified, type, and size. If you are unable to edit the information, it may be due to file permissions or the file format not supporting metadata editing. By following these steps, you should be able to organize your music collection for use in Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player effectively. If you encounter any specific issues during the process, feel free to provide more details for further assistance.
