Windows 7 Constant BSOD after Windows updates

Aitch

New Member
Hi everyone, looking for some help with my BSOD problems. About a month ago I built a new PC and loaded it with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. The copy I had was about a year old so of course since then I've been installing Windows updates to get caught up. A couple of weeks ago one set of updates appeared to cause BSOD upon restarts. When I roll back a set of updates the problems go away. Now there are a pile of updates so I haven't gone through them one by one, but I think there is probably a conflict with drivers, or possibly a memory problem.

With the updates installed, I can get the computer to start fine with only one stick of 2GB RAM installed, but with 2x 2GB RAM installed it crashes. I've attached the dump files of the latest crash here, which was with both memory sticks installed and all updates performed. I've also run MemTest on the sticks which didn't seem to indicate any errors.

If someone could take a look at the dump files and help me out it would be greatly appreciated. I tried looking at them with BlueScreenView but that mainly pointed to ntoskrnl.exe which I understand is flagged when the other problems can't be pinpointed.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome. If you post new crashes in the future, please use the paperclip here above where you type, instead.

1) Google for the Norton/Symantec removal tool and download it. Then boot to safe mode and use it to remove. Boot to normal mode and install MSE.

2) Visit HP.com and download/install the latest keyboard driver:

HPKBx64 HPKBx64.sys Tue Nov 07 08:05:06 2006

3) Update Realtek lan driver:

Rt64win7 Rt64win7.sys Thu Feb 26 04:04:13 2009

Thanks for the advice! I removed Norton and installed MSE. Haven't had any problems with it in the past so I'd never been concerned about using Norton.

I couldn't find that specific HP driver on their website but found the most recent driver for smart card keyboards/Win7 x64.

Lastly, I couldn't get the Realtek driver from their site as the links on that page weren't working for me. However, last night the computer restarted just fine a few times; this morning I got another BSOD. Searched some more and found the Realtek driver from XDrivers, and installed. Lets see if this fixes things.

1.
I couldn't find that specific HP driver on their website but found the most recent driver for smart card keyboards/Win7 x64.

That's what it is, PC-SC Driver for HP USB Smartcard Keyboard. : )

2. Realtek - if you have difficulty finding it on Realtek site, then HP support should have one.

On the Realtek link either will do you:

Win7 and WinServer 2008 R2 Driver 7.031 2010/11/22
Win7 and WinServer 2008 R2 Auto Installation Program (SID:1432824) 7.031 2010/11/22

But the Auto installer may be your easiest option

Well, as mentioned I got the latest LAN driver installed and things seemed to be stable. However I just had another BSOD on startup. After a couple of restarts things are ok again but I don't know what's still causing it. The latest minidump file is attached. Any suggestions?

Memory is faulty or set unwell in the bios. Post a screen shot of CPU-Z spd and memory tabs. We'll see if bios is set wrong.

Here are the CPU-Z screenshots:

THANK YOU! That probably would have taken me 3 days to figure out on my own. Hope that fixes things for good!

Things were ok until I came home tonight and turned on. Got a blank screen after loading up Firefox; restarted and got a BSOD. Started in safe mode, then restarted normally and I'm online ok now. Also checked the memory settings but they are still fine. The latest dump file is attached.

Ok I'm feeling kinda useless at this. I've installed the newest HP smartcard keyboard drivers, but the "HID Keyboard Device" and "USB Composite Device" in the device manager still seem to have old 2006 drivers. When I look at the details though they are provided by Microsoft, not HP. They use "usbccgp.sys", "kbdclass.sys" and "kbdhid.sys".

I uninstalled all the devices associated with the keyboard, and then deleted the HPKBx64.sys file as well. Then reinstalled the keyboard using only the 2009 HP driver installer. It still put the HPKBx64.sys file back in the Windows driver folder. I don't know what device is using this driver or how to get around it.

Do the best you can to update HP Keyboard, if you say you've tried and it's the latest then check if your notebook is officialy compatible with Windows 7. 2006 does look quite outdated.

What is the SHARP Mebius Privacy Box? I'm not aware of any program by SHARP on my computer or anything making use of that. When I google I also find references to scfilter.sys being a Windows smart-card reader driver (although other people say it causes problems with smart-cards not installing properly).
