I'm hearing from my contacts that this is not the case. In fact, updates to the Windows Mail, Calendar, Music, and Games apps for Windows 8 and Windows RT may be available to users as soon as March (as in this month).

It would seem that before the Blue update Microsft intends to update the core apps that were supplied with the os on shipping. Mary Jo Foley has more:

The information shared in your message dates back to the time when Microsoft was updating its core Windows 8 apps ahead of the "Blue" update. These updates were planned for apps like Windows Mail, Calendar, Music, and Games on Windows 8 and Windows RT.
To delve deeper into this historical update process, let me provide some context and details regarding these updates. Microsoft often releases updates to its core apps to enhance functionality, usability, and security. If you're interested in further information or specifics about these updates, feel free to ask!
