so what are you saying...the font is too small or the icon?

If you right-click on the desktop and hit 'personalise' you'll see written in the box on the left hand side 'Adjust Font size (DPI)'. You change the text size using that.

I know this sounds like a dumb question but have you tried changing the background picture?

No. I have a pleasing background of my home town. I fixed my problem by changing the font characteristics to a sans serif font and chose the bold version of the font.
