Windows 7 DNS server not responding?

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Are you certain that you are having the same issue (you're getting DNS Server not responding during the troubleshooting process)?
If so start with the basics and see what you can ping
Open a command prompt and type
ping 10.0.0.138
That's the inside edge of your router / NAT firewall...... what are the results?
Again type
ping 130.67.15.198
That's ns11.e.nsc.no (Name Server 11 for TELENOR NORGE AS) presumably your provider's DNS server at or near Asker Norway...... what are the results?
Again type
ping 193.213.112.4
That's ns12.e.nsc.no (Name Server 12 for TELENOR NORGE AS) Again presumably your provider's DNS server at or near Asker Norway..... what are the results?
Open a browser window and in the address / URL bar (not search bar) and type
74.125.225.179
that's all nothing else, hit enter. What is the result? Does Google Open in your browser.

What Browser are you using?
What Anti Virus / Anti Malware Security Suite(s) are you using?
Open task manager, click the button at the bottom left that says "Show processes for all users" look for something callled "mDNSresponder"
If present open the services console
Click start and type
services.msc
hit enter
scroll as needed and see if you can find either
bonjour service and or a string value similar to this ##Id_String1.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762##
if either or both are present, double click it or them and click the stop button and set the startup type to disabled.
Keep us posted
Randy

as you can see, i got the same results of pinging the router as i got from the Name server 11 from TELENOR NORGE AS.

However the last Ip Address gave me a different result :

-------------------------------------------------------

i typed in the in the IP address, and Google came popping up.

I am currently using Google chrome
I am also using AVG anti virus, however, my web browser have no problems whatsoever, it more of my communication programs and online gaming like world of warcraft, that seems to be struggling.

i did not have the mDNSresponder present in my proccesses, but i checked anyway. nothing that seemed familiar with that you pointed out to look after.

I am a bit concerned that you cannot ping the inside edge of your own router, however that may be a product of a configuration issue within the router itself blocking pings.
I am more concerned that you cannot ping one of your provider's DNS server addresses as I have no issue doing so from the center of the United States (not particularly fast for me but still four responses no dropped or lost packets)
So let's try this first and see what the results are.
Remove (completely uninstall) AVG.
Use the programs and features applet in the Control Panel and uninstall. Then follow that up by using this vendor specific proprietary removal tool. Link Removed (get the correct version for your architecture)
Replace it for the time being with MSE from here Link Removed due to 404 Error
After uninstalling AVG reboot.
Install MSE reboot.
Test and see if your issue is still present.
If so check and confirm that you have this driver from here installed and currently in use ASUS - Networks- ASUS PCE-N53 just to be sure that Windows Updates or another resource hasn't altered or otherwise corrupted the appropriate driver. ( I wouldn't think so since your internet, according to what you have said is working fine but it's worth a look see.)

Additionally it appears that you have not upgraded your OS installation so you may want to consider upgrading to Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from here Link Removed after first taking advantage of the Update Readiness Tool.
UPDATE READINESS TOOL.
Download and install the correct system readiness tool prior to installing SP1.
Link Removed
Link Removed
With respect to games and other unspecified "communications" applications you will want to check and confirm that you are using the latest versions of any such software including any patches, updates, hotfixes or upgrades, etc.,

i did, as you told me above, but im still sitting at the same point as ive started with, im helpless. didnt seem to be the antivirus disturbing it.

doesnt seem like nothing change either im afraid. only solution left i sit up with is to talk with the house keeper, and ask him to reset the router. hope you have any other solutions that can help me out of this mess!

OK, if you say so, but I would have expected to see 6.1.7601 rather than Version 6.1.7600 as your version identifier if you had SP1 installed.
But anyway, if you have your drivers up to date and your internet browser(s) seem to be working without issue then I would expect the issue could very likely be an issue with the router / NAT firewall or even with your native windows 7 firewall. Some applications may need certain ports and or protocols allowed in order for them to work correctly. Software documentation may provide information relative to what they might need in the form of port forwarding pinholes or firewall rules regarding proper operation.
Take up the topic with whoever is responsible for managing the router (resetting may help but if he or she has a saved config file that he reloads after the reset then you'll likely be back to square one again).
Is anyone else on the network running the identical programs that you are having problems with? Are they having similar problems? If not maybe take a look and compare settings you may just need to make sure that the program is allowed through the Windows 7 Firewall on your local machine.

All-

Does anything here look awry? It doesn't seem that I have a DNS issue any longer but my network continues to switch on/off on an intermittent basis.

Thanks.

Hey again, i clarified my problem to the housekeeper, and asked him nicely to restart/reset the modem/router, and now it seems perfectly fine at this time being. so my guess is a direct conflict in the DNS server to the router!. i appreciate all help from you trouble, as i've also learned a quite bit, if this problem would occur again!

Good to hear. Glad you managed to resolve your issue and thanks for posting back and updating your thread with the method you found successful.
Thanks for joining our community and we hope to continue to see you around the forum.

Hello trouble.

I have been attempting to setup my wireless internet in my apartment, and I thought I had it until the dns-server-not-responding error occurred. I am trying to copy the text from the cmd prompt of the command ipconfig/all but I cannot copy the text. How can I copy that text?

Hello Matt and welcome to the forum.
It looks to me like your IP addressing scheme is either wrong on your wired network or more likely since you are having trouble with your wireless wrong on your wireless network, it's unlikely that you would have two separate and different working default gateways on the same subnet, so you need to address this either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 is the actual default gateway. It looks like you have two routers involved in handing out DHCP on your network and both think they are the default gateway which is very unlikely.
So if you are cascading two devices, please do so by plugging them together using switch port to switch port to avoid double NAT as well as potential IP addressing conflicts and turn off DHCP on the downstream router and let the upstream router do DHCP and probably DNS too for that matter and let it forward DNS queries to your ISP's name servers for resolution.
Good luck
Regards
Randy

Thanks Randy. Before you posted I did some trouble shooting and ended up solving the issue. I had to configure my wireless device and then have it do something with the physical address of my computer and plugging in the value. I'm not honestly sure what I did, but its working fine now. I appreciate the timely response.

Good to hear, maybe something like this
Haven't actually had to use that one in a while.
So when you do a new ipconfig /all do you still see different default gateways reflected for your wireless versus your wired adapter? Or was that old data that hadn't been subjected to a release and renew yet?

I have the same problem with the DNS Server not responding. I have tried pretty much everything on this thread and more. I had Mcafee installed, but I uninstalled it already. I am pretty sure that Mcafee isn't the issue because my internet still doesn't work. Can someone please help? I have been stuck for a couple hours.

I am having an issue with my DNS server too... When i go to my mothers, it won't let me get on wireless. It says that I am connected but I can't browse the web. Sometimes it says firewall and other times it says it's a problem with the DNS... please please help

Hi Brittni,

I've already replied to the pm you sent me about this but I'll paste a copy of my reply here so we can continue in the public arena which is potentially most beneficial to other site users. I repled as follows:

First step in analysing connection/dns errors is to check the wireless cofiguration. Go to Programs, Accessories, command prompt and run it. In the command screen enter the command:

ipconfig /all >desktop\ipcon.txt.

The will place a file called ipcon.txt on your desktop.Post a copy here and we'll check it out for you.

Regards,
Pat

I am having the same issue with a new desktop computer that I just bought. The old one had an ethernet connection that worked fine, but I have only been able to get the new one to work for a couple of hours in the past three days. I've tried plugging the old one back into the same connection and it is now wonky too. Tech support from both the store where I bought it and my ISP have said it is a problem with my router. I have tried rebooting it several times and have checked the TCP/IP settings (v4 are set to obtain addresses automatically; I have disabled v6). I am not running McAfee (but did have Norton preinstalled), am using IE as my browser. I tried booting in safe mode and still have no connection. I also can't seem to connect to the web interface for my router.

I pinged the DHCP server and got a response for all four packets in 2ms. When I pinged the DNS server, the first three requests timed out and the last one received a reply in 18ms. (I have no idea what this means, but saw it in an earlier message.)

Wireless connections work fine for my laptop and my iPad.

Any help that anyone can provide would be much appreciated. Below are the results from the ipconfig /all and from the two pings.

Thanks!
