Windows 7 Interrupt Exception Not Handled - Random

I built this computer several months ago and have already tackled 2 other BSODs. This 3rd one is annoying me a great deal so any help is much appreciated!

I've barely used the computer because I don't see it ready to use with all these problems. I'm not an overclocker. I just want this computer to run neatly with the hardware I've shoved into it, on a clean Windows 7.

I haven't ever had any boot problems. All the minor issues and 2 BSODs occurred at random times or during Windows 7 Backup. This may sound unrelated but I'm beginning to think it's due to the setup of my two 1TB SATAIII Hard Drives (AHCI).

memtest86+ was all green.

I'm hoping a genius BSOD evaluator can help me!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Captain,
Thanks for your help and apologies for my delayed response.

I ran MemTest86+ for 8 passes and no problems came about.
I went through the chkdsk steps (wow, it took a long time to complete) - no errors found.

I enabled the Driver Verifier and got a BSOD when restarting. I read further down that thread and found out I shouldn't tick the "<unknown>" drivers. I went through it again with the correct settings and restarted with no problems. However, nothing looked different. I'm not sure what that verifier did.

I have also attached the folder created by the Diagnostic Tool (I wasn't sure what you meant by "expect dump files", sorry :frown:)

Thanks again for helping!

Hi Cybercore,
Thanks to you as well for the help!

I don't recall changing the memory timings (I don't even know how to :) ). I'm going to head to the BIOS now to try and find it and revert the settings back to default.

The Marvell drivers are a nightmare. The Asus download site has various drivers listed for my motherboard:

Marvell 912x Controller Driver V1.0.0.1036
Marvell 9128 Controller Driver V1.0.0.1034 (WHQL)

The newer driver (not WHQL) causes BSOD so I've dropped down to the older one that is WHQL and it appears to be fine.

I can't find a newer driver for NEC USB 3.0 (currently 1.0.20.0).

Thanks a lot for your help!

I thought I would be clever and download the latest of each driver separately, as opposed to sticking in the motherboard disc and receiving a load of bloatware. I'm tempted to format, reinstall OS and start again.

Hello,

How is the Memory timings thing going ? Then there are lot of failures for Windows Update especially on Microsoft Anti Malware engine. I would also recommend you to reboot under Safe Mode and Download Malwarebytes and run a complete scanning. Is the Driver Verifier still running ? If not turn it on and let it run for 36 hours.

I managed to find the memory timings section in the BIOS and everything was set to AUTO/Default.

I'm certain it's not malware but I will run that scan anyway just to make sure. It's a clean Windows 7. The only programs installed are Google Chrome, Google Talk, Microsoft Security Essentials.

I switched off the Driver Verifier since I had no idea what it was doing (should it output anything anywhere? log file?). I'll enable it again and leave it on as you recommend.

Is it worth formatting and reinstalling everything? As I say, I have nothing to loose - No documents. I'm just worried that I'll end up in the same place again.

Thanks for your continued help...
:)

Hello,

Post a screenshot of CPU-Z again we we can see any changes has made. Then Driver Verifier will catch the bad or rouge driver that is crashing your System and record it under the crash dump file no other logs. Turn in on for 36 hours. If we didn't reach anywhere then we could try to reinstall the OS.

Good Luck !

CPU-Z shows the same info as the previous screenshot.
Driver Verifier has been (and still is) running - I am trying to get a BSOD now by running Windows Backup (normally does the trick!).
I'll post BSOD as soon as I get it.

Thanks!

I got the BSOD and have attached the dmp. As expected, it happened during Windows Backup. It finished backing up documents (as always) and began taking image backup. Then came the crash (as always).

I couldn't boot back up afterwards. It got stuck on "Starting Windows" for 20 mins with no HDD activity. I turned off and on to finally boot into Windows.

It's not looking good is it?!
I just can't work out what it is!
Always happens during backup (image). Sometimes during just web browsing. Sometimes in idle. Just all so unrelated! I know the cause is always 3rd party software but I'm beginning to blame Windows.

I'll wait for a reply from someone on here with some advice but at the moment I'm thinking of starting afresh (...and ending up back on this forum with the same problem  )

Thanks!

EDIT: ntoskrnl.exe ?!

1. Disable driver verifier - start > verifier.exe /reset

VERIFIER_ENABLED_VISTA_MINIDUMP

2. Update drivers as in my 1st post:

Update Marvell:

mv91xx.sys Fri Dec 25 01:45:39 2009
Marvell magni

mvxxmm.sys Fri Dec 25 01:45:15 2009
Marvell Flash Technologies

Update motherboard driver for NEC USB 3.0:

nusb3hub.sys Tue Feb 23 21:10:14 2010

Memory is not set right, should be 9-9-9-24. Load optimized defaults in the bios.
Attach cpu-z memory and spd tabs then.

I've disabled Driver Verifier now.

My memory settings are all set to 'default' and 'auto' in BIOS. Should I change them to what you suggest?

I managed to find a newer version of the Marvell driver (with huge difficulty). ASUS don't have the driver listed and neither does Marvell.

Link Removed due to 404 Error

I also updated my NEC USB 3.0 Driver which was extremely confusing.
Updated from
NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Controller v.1.0.20.0
to
Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Controller v2.0.32.0.

I restarted and ran Windows Backup (my trusted testing tool) and it completed successfully! So it can be said that progress has been made, but I'm going to give it a week.

I will be sure to update this thread next weekend!

Thanks a bunch to cybercore and Captain Jack!
:)

"Auto" should set them right. If it crashes again though, go into bios and adjust THE TIMINGS only.9-9-9-24.

Confusing indeed. Should have checked downloads at your motherboard support site.

Yeah, motherboard downloads page had NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Controller v.1.0.19.0 (even older).
I don't remember ASUS being this bad. They've changed :(

Thanks again. I'll confirm system stability next week.

It could well have been the NEC USB 3.0 driver (now Renesas USB 3.0), but I think the main culprit was the Marvell driver.

I did some more research on the issue and don't understand how this problem isn't being looked at more seriously. The joint (lack of) efforts of Marvell and, surprisingly, Asus made this problem a massive headache to resolve.

Marvell don't actually offer any support for this product. Their website is extremely poor for support and doesn't even have this SATA Controller part (88SE9128) listed anywhere. Emailing Marvell would get you nothing but a bot-reply, advising you to contact Asus about the issue. Disgraceful.

So Asus...
You'd think they would keep the download page up to date. All of the listed driver downloads available for my motherboard on the Asus site are old and some unstable (at the time of writing).

During my research, I landed on pages that I thought would help other people in my situation (so I bookmarked it straight away in case I BSODed).

Here is a good read for anyone interested (Summary in posts 4,5 and 6). And another (ie. post 12).

After further reading, I learnt that others with the same problem ended up ditching the Marvell Controller and switching to SATA2. I, however, kept at it.

Solution (I hope) : Download your drivers for Asus P6X58D-E from Link Removed due to 404 Error. They appear to update the listing extremely quickly (I can currently see one with yesterday's date).

IMO, Asus should be helping out and Marvell should be hiding. Marvell produced a chip that didn't really work. Asus brought out a motherboard and used "SATA3 6Gbps" as a selling point. I'm glad Marvell managed to push out the new driver last month but believe the lack of service from the two companies is far from applaudable.

As with the NEC USB 3.0 Controller Driver:
Seems like NEC's 'USB department' has very subtly changed to Renesas. Therefore, searching for 'NEC usb 3 driver' wouldn't quite work. I read the release notes history that came with the latest download and found, under Version 2.0.4.0 May 14th, 2010:

- Driver Provider Name in the INF file was changed from NEC Electronics
to Renesas Electronics.

This isn't a rant of any kind. I just thought I'd take the time to document the results somewhere. Let's hope that people will land here during their frustrating online searches.

Thanks! :)
