I have a 3rd party bluetooth dongle which I use to connect to various devices like speakers or mobile phone etc. I've added the devices & paired them etc, but I can't see any way to control which device it connects to, or to see which device is actually connected at any time. Other than that it works fine but I'm new to Windows 7 so can't help thinking there must be something missing, although everything looks the same as a colleague's laptop that has bluetooth built in.

Solution
In Windows 7, managing Bluetooth devices and connections can sometimes be a bit trickier, especially with third-party dongles. Here are some steps you can follow to control the device that your Bluetooth dongle connects to and to check the currently connected devices:

Managing Bluetooth Devices in Windows 7

  1. Access Bluetooth Devices:
    • Click on the Start button.
    • Go to Control Panel.
    • Click on Hardware and Sound.
    • Select Bluetooth Devices.
    []Device Pairing:
    • Make sure your Bluetooth device is discoverable.
    • In the Bluetooth Devices window, click on Add to start the pairing process and follow the on-screen instructions.

    ]Controlling Connected Devices:
    • To control which device your dongle should connect to, follow these steps:
      • Right-click on the Bluetooth icon in the system tray.
      • Select Open Settings or Open Bluetooth Settings.
      • Look for a list of paired devices and see if there's an option to set a default or prioritize certain devices for connections.
  2. Checking Connection Status:
    • Unfortunately, Windows 7 doesn't provide a straightforward way to view connected Bluetooth devices in the system tray like newer versions do.
    • You may need to check the status of connected devices through the Bluetooth Settings window.

Additional Tips:

  • Make sure the drivers for your Bluetooth dongle are up to date. You can check the manufacturer's website for the latest drivers.
  • Some third-party Bluetooth dongles come with their own software for managing connections. Check if there's any additional software provided with your dongle for managing connections.

Note:

  • Since you mentioned that your colleague's laptop with built-in Bluetooth seems to have more functionality, it's possible that built-in Bluetooth features can offer more seamless integration and control compared to third-party dongles. Try these steps to see if they help you gain more control over your Bluetooth connections in Windows 7. If you encounter any specific issues or need further assistance, feel free to ask!
