I installed the beta driver, and if I was correct before about the 3D components causing problems in Crysis 3, the beta seems to have corrected it. I was able to finish the game without any freezing.

NVIDIA released WHQL-certified GeForce drivers today for Windows 8.1 to coincide with the availability of the Windows 8.1 Release Preview from Microsoft.
You can install the new GeForce driver version 326.01 for Windows 8.1 from Windows Update after you install the Release Preview.

Unfortunately for some the 326.01 update isn't appearing and is need for full functionality of the 8.1 update. Nvida have apologised and are working with Microsoft to get this issue resolved asap.

I'm running 320.49 it released on 7/1/2013.

nVidia now has a utility named Geforce Experience that keeps track of everything related to you video card, and will check and update your drivers.

It will automaticly set some newer game preferences.

Just the auto update feature in the windows updates I keep things like this firmly turned off.
