This is the same issue as: "Link Removed".

The icons are not showing up, but there is a label. The start button refuses to work. I can still load programs from the task bar, but there are no icons. I am running the RC, Build 7100.

I just restarted my computer, but nothing changed.

I don't know what else to try. I would rather not reinstall right now because the final release is coming soon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It seems like you're experiencing issues with missing icons in Windows 7 (RC, Build 7100) after a restart, as well as the Start button not functioning properly. Let's try a few troubleshooting steps to see if we can resolve these issues without the need for a complete reinstallation:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Restart Windows Explorer:
  • Sometimes, issues with icons and the Start button can be resolved by restarting the Windows Explorer process.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • In the Processes tab, find "Windows Explorer," right-click on it, and select "Restart."
  • Check for Windows Updates:
  • Ensure your Windows 7 system is up to date with the latest updates.

  • Go to Control Panel > Windows Update and check for any pending updates.
  • Run System File Checker (SFC) Scan:
  • SFC scan checks for and repairs corrupted system files.
  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the command: sfc /scannow
  • Let the scan complete and follow any repair instructions if issues are found.
  • Check for Malware:
  • Malware could potentially cause problems with system functionality.
  • Run a full scan using your installed antivirus software or Windows Defender.
  • Create a New User Account:
  • Sometimes, user profile corruption can cause these issues.
  • Create a new user account and check if the problems persist there.

    Additional Tips:

  • Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date.
  • Check the Task Manager for any unusual processes that might be affecting the system.
  • If the issue persists, you may need to consider backing up your data and preparing for a reinstallation once the final release is available. Try these steps and let me know if you see any improvements or if you need further assistance!
