Windows 7 Possible hardware related Win 7 + XP regular BSODs

Hello experts!

I've recently been experiencing a very regular BSOD on my PC. I'm fairly sure it's a hardware issue (minidumps here: View attachment Minidumps.zip) as I've had a look at the minidump and it's a 124 error (0x124_GenuineIntel or X64_0x124_GenuineIntel_PROCESSOR_BUS depending on which dump I open). I thought that heat might have been the problem, so I've cleaned the (admittedly large amount of) dust from the innards, but it doesn't seem to have helped. Still could be the problem I guess, especially as the problem appears to become more severe (every 5 mins instead of every hour, say) when it's switched on for a long time. But then it also happens whenever I try anything processor-intensive (I think - haven't tested that extensively).

Two interesting points to note:

1) I have a dual boot Win 7 / XP system and the BSOD happens on both (lending weight to the hardware problem guess).
2) This started shortly after I installed a multitouch simulator for WP7 development on windows 7 (see Step by Step Tutorial : Installing Multi-Touch Simulator for Silverlight Phone 7 | Michael Sync). I have subsequently uninstalled, but the very first BSOD happened seconds after installation - coincidence?

I also could swear that I recently heard a mysterious loud "crack" noise, but I don't know when and I don't know if it came from the computer. But it's possible. Probably best to ignore that one.

I am currently running the win 7 memory test tool, but it's taking hours. I'll report back and edit this post if it comes back with any results.

In the meantime, if anyone can take a look at those minidump file and help out I'd be eternally grateful!

Here's a snippet of sample output from the most recent minidump:

Hi, welcome to the forums,

as you've noticed it is

Probably caused by : hardware
WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124)
X64_0x124_GenuineIntel_PROCESSOR_BUS

which is not good.

First of all uninstall whatever you've installed recently and unplug whatever you've plugged in. Check your CPU - primetest95 and memory - memtest86 overnight or during 3-4 hrs.

Hi.

First lets take care of all software issues. Then if still necessary, we can look at hardware. Software (drivers) sometimes triggers these stops. I see notorious problems. Let's start.

Install my attachment to update your ATK0110 driver to latest:

Code:
ASACPI ASACPI.sys Sun Mar 27 22:30:36 2005
----------

Visit Intel's website to let it scan and install the latest drivers. This network driver is way too old and absolutely needs an update:

Code:
E1G6032E E1G6032E.sys Wed May 28 19:14:51 2008
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx?iid=gg_support-EN_01+home_downloadctr

------------

Reboot.

Post new dumps if it becomes necessary. We'll see what we can do or hopefully the above may have already fixed it.

This one is less related to the crash, but you may want to update it at some point:

I think you might have mixed up crash dumps, perhaps? (I'm only looking at most recent, but that's not in there at all - so nothing to be concerned with.)

You're welcome. But why a few days to uninstall a software, install a driver from this page and let another page scan and install? That's like 5-7 minutes worth, less on a fast pc.

:)

Because it's late and I'm starting a new job on Monday so I want to avoid computers for a bit ;)

I actually tried your driver update suggestions, but my pc is bluescreening within seconds of startup now, so I haven't got past the java plugin install yet! I will put it to bed for the night and try again in the morning once it's cooled down properly.

Cheers,

Karli

Great! You can boot to safe mode + networking to do everything, which shoudn't bsod there. If it does, definite hardware issue.

Much luck with the new employment!

Here's where I'm up to:

  • Managed to update the ATK0110 driver.
  • The Windows 7 memory test freezes after a few minutes and I can't get it to run through.
  • Got the Intel tool to run; it seemed to think the wired network driver was up to date, but the graphics, audio and wireless network driver were not.

At this point I'm getting BSODs even in safe mode, and almost too frequently for me to copy any new minidumps over the network. I think it may well be time to admit defeat on this one and buy some new components. I'm hoping it's safe to reuse my graphics card and hard drives at least though, but my prime suspect now is CPU and/or motherboard.

Glad I posted here though - I definitely know where to come if I have any problems like this again. Thanks all!

Karli

That sounded worth a try...

Got to 93% of the first pass, 40% of the way through test #8 for 4096M - 5120M. No errors detected, but it hit an "Unexpected Interrupt - Halting" message with the following data:

Type: 47d5
PC: 86
CS: b
Eflag: bfffff00
Code: 10
DS: 2bb20
SS: 2ba34

Plus what looks like a whole bunch register and stack info values.

Will now repeat for a single DIMM and cycle through them.

Cheers,

Karli

After much testing, it seems that the "B" channel memory slots are not working. My system *seems* to work fine with DIMMs in A1-A2 slots only, regardless of which DIMMs I choose. I currently have 4x1GB, so I have the option of switching to 2x2GB. That would be far cheaper than a new PC obviously!

Thanks again for the help - I'll mark this as solved.

Cheers,

Karli
