When I read the original source, it sound like a reasonable security precaution for the less knowledgeable users.

Agreed.

If it's only the very worst of these apps then that's fine. I just hope it stops at that.

In one way it is a good idea but how far will MS intrude on other software? Defender doesn't have the greatest record compared to other AV products. I know a lot of these products are junk and have a lot of crap bundled. I like Ccleaner and have used it for years.
