I have a problem with my Dell Inspiron 3000 Series Windows 8.1. It will detect several networks in the area, but I can only connect to the ones which are not password protected. I keep trying to connect to my home network with (what I think) is the correct password, but it says, "Connection is taking longer than usual", then it fails. Does anyone know how to fix this? My brother's identical Inspiron is running Windows 8 and it has no problems...

Also, this is probably not network based, but sometimes the computer has a huge delay between clicking icons and opening the program...like, one to two minutes...could this be a virus? Norton 360 hasn't discovered anything...

Solution
It sounds like you are facing two distinct problems with your Dell Inspiron 3000 Series running Windows 8.1. Here are some steps you can take to address each issue:

Network Connectivity:

  1. Ensure Password Correctness:
    • Double-check that you are entering the correct password for your home network. Passwords are case-sensitive, so ensure you are entering it exactly as required.
    []Network Profile:
    • Try forgetting the network and reconnecting. Go to Network and Sharing Center, choose "Manage Wireless Networks," find your network, and choose "Remove."
    [
    ]Update Wireless Drivers:
    • Ensure your wireless network card drivers are up to date. You can do this through Device Manager...

    ]Update Wireless Drivers:
    • Ensure your wireless network card drivers are up to date. You can do this through Device Manager or by visiting Dell's support website for driver updates.
    []Power Cycle Devices:
    • Sometimes power cycling your router/modem and laptop can resolve network connection issues. Turn off both devices, wait a minute, then restart them.
    [
    ]Network Troubleshooter:
    • Use Windows Network Troubleshooter to diagnose and repair common network connection problems. Right-click the network icon in the system tray, select "Troubleshoot problems," and follow the steps.

Slow Program Launch:

  1. Disk Cleanup:
    • Perform a disk cleanup to remove temporary files and free up disk space. This can improve system performance.
    []Disable Startup Programs:
    • Disable unnecessary startup programs that may be slowing down your system. Go to Task Manager > Startup to manage startup items.
    [
    ]System Scan:
    • Run a full system scan with your antivirus software to check for malware or viruses that could be causing the slow performance.
    []Check Resource Usage:
    • Monitor Task Manager for high CPU or memory usage when you experience delays. Identify the programs causing the spikes.
    [
    ]File System Check:
    • Run the Windows System File Checker to check for and repair corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type sfc /scannow. By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot your network connectivity issues and address the slow program launch problem on your Dell Inspiron 3000 Series laptop.
