Windows Vista Taskbar icon problem

I have accidentally deleted the desktop icon off the taskbar.
Creating a shortcut for the desktop and putting in the taskbar doesnt work
because it opens up a separate window which shows the contents of the desktop,
how can I get it to behave the way the original icon / shortcut did by taking me
directly to the actual desktop?

Brilliant.
I've used Macs all my working life, only recently changing over to PC
and am finding the mysteries of Windows somewhat problematic . . .
