After installing w7 update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.83.1506.0) Outlook 2003 wont start normally: When I try to open it, I get a msg box saying
"Microsoft Office Outlook has stopped working. Windows is looking for a solution from the problem"

This is unsuccessful and the box disappears. So I try to run Outlook again and I now get a box giving me the option to start it in "safe mode" of not at all.

All this started after W update grabbed the PC and installed update mentioned above. I am sick of customizing Outlook (only a few lightweight mods to layout, nothing heavy) to the way I use each time I invoke the software.

As the above update involved Windows Defender, and is non-uninstallable (there's a junk computing term if ever there was one), I feel lumbered. My anti-virus is the latest ESET bt the way. I run a 'vanilla' W7 installation straight off the DVD.

I don't think I have done anything wrong to cause this and I will be unhappy if I have to clamber all over the insides of my PC to sort this out.

Solution
The issue you're experiencing with Outlook 2003 after installing the Windows 7 update for Windows Defender (KB915597) seems to be related to a compatibility problem between the update and Outlook. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue without diving into complex PC modifications:

Potential Solutions:

  1. Start Outlook in Safe Mode:
    • Since you're prompted to start Outlook in safe mode, try running it in safe mode to see if it opens successfully. Safe mode disables any add-ins that might be causing the issue.
    • To start Outlook in safe mode, you might need to press and hold the CTRL key while opening Outlook.

    []Disable Add-ins:
    • If Outlook opens in safe mode, it's possible that an add-in is causing the problem. Disable add-ins one by one to identify the culprit:
      • Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
      • Disable one add-in at a time and restart Outlook to pinpoint the problematic one.
    [
    ]Repair Office Installation:
    • Try repairing your Microsoft Office installation:
      • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Right-click on Microsoft Office and select Change.
      • Choose the Repair option and follow the on-screen instructions.
[]Rollback the Update (As a Last Resort):
    • If the problem persists, you may need to consider uninstalling the problematic update. However, this should be done cautiously and as a last resort.
      • Navigate to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > View installed updates.
      • Locate the KB915597 update and uninstall it.
    [
]Check for Office and Windows Updates:
    • Ensure that both Microsoft Office and Windows 7 are up to date with the latest updates. Sometimes, newer updates can address compatibility issues.
  2. Contact Microsoft Support:
    • If none of the above solutions work, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for assistance tailored to your specific issue.

      Note:

      • Remember to back up important data before making any changes to your system.
      • Always exercise caution when modifying system settings.
By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot the issue with Outlook 2003 and hopefully resolve it without extensive modifications to your PC. If you encounter any difficulties or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out.
