Windows 7 Assorted BSODs - please help me!

Hi

For the last few days, I've had problems with Windows 7 crashing, giving me BSODs with various error messages. I've attached 2 dump files, although there were more before I used system restore (which didn't do any good).

Aside from the zipped dump files, I've also had DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL & PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA. But from what I've seen, it seems to be ntoskrnl.exe that crops up most of all.

The only new thing with my PC is a media switch box that I can plug in my wii, vhs and PC into, that allows me to play each of these through my monitor and speakers. But this has been set up a week before the troubles started, and it would surely not affect the PC anyway?

I have tried to sort it out myself using the guide that is posted at the top of the thread, but it seems to be beyond me. I've put as much of my computer spec on my profile as I know, but if you need to know anything else, just ask and I'll try and find out.

Thanks, Mike.

Hi Mike and Welcome to The Forum.

STOP 0x0000007F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
Usual causes:
Memory corruption, Hardware (memory in particular), Overclocking failure, Installing a faulty or mismatched hardware (especially memory) or a failure after installing it, 3rd party firewall, Device drivers, SCSI/network/BIOS updates needed, Improperly seated cards, Incompatible storage devices, Overclocking, Virus scanner, Backup tool, Bad motherboard, Missing Service Pack.

Your latest dump file lists ntkrnlmp.exe as the probable cause. This is a Windows System file and for it to be the cause of your crash is highly unlikely.
Old and incompatible drivers can and do cause issues with Windows 7, often giving false error codes. Random stop codes can often indicate hardware issues.

As a Priority:

AVG is known to be a cause of BSOD's on Windows 7 systems. Suggest that you uninstall it. Download the correct AVG Remover for your system (32 or 64 bit).
If you have AVG ID protection installed, download the AVGID Protection Remover from the above link as well (it wouldn't hurt to download and run it anyway). Download BSOD friendly Link Removed due to 404 Error as AVG's replacement.
Uninstall AVG through the Control Panel. Re-boot to Safe Mode and run the AVG Removal tool(s). Re-boot to normal mode and install MSE. Make sure your Windows firewall is enabled! Feel free to re-try AVG after your blue screens have been resolved.

  • Download and install Driver Sweeper.
  • Uninstall your current Graphics setup through Programs and Features
  • Boot to (preferably) Safe Mode and run Driver Sweeper to clean up the remnants of your current Graphics set up.
  • Reboot to Normal Mode.
  • Install your new Graphics set up.

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (7f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
        use .trap on that value
Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.

Wow thanks Elmer - will try all that when I get home tonight and post the results. Good of you to respond so fast!

Hello again, I've done the first part, that is fully removing AVG and replacing with MSE. So far, so good.

When you say to uninstall my current graphics setup through programs and features, which programs from the list below do you mean? Just certain drivers, or everything from Nvidia?

Programs and features snip.JPG

Also, when it comes to getting new drivers for the nForce Ethernet on the NVIDIA site, I come up aginst a blank wall, as it needs me to select a series number, which I can't seem to find. When I try to look elsewhere for a driver for a n-force 10/100/1000 mbps ethernet for windows 7, I get a huge choice. Any idea?

Thanks again for your assistance!

Mike.

please ignore - managed to duplicate my post!
Thatll be because you are a new member Mike and your posts won't appear until they've been "moderated", especially if they contain attachments/links. This is to combat a wave of spam that's been hitting the site. I think one more post and you'll be in the clear!! :D

I've got an AMD/ATI card and if I uninstall the cat control centre, that gives me options to uninstall everything from AMD/ATI. I think the one you have to look at is the nVidia Graphics driver 260.99. What that doesn't remove, Driver Sweeper will when you run that in Safe Mode.

I'll have a look for the Ethernet driver(s).

Hey Elmer,

Sorry there's been no feedback the last few days, but for obvious reasons, and like so many others, I've been rather busy with Christmas preperations, and haven't had time to follow your repair advice. I can report though that although I seem to have had only one further BSOD (attached), Windows seems to crash often, often when I am away from my PC, but when I am there, I notice narrow horizontal lines appear at either the top or bottom of the screen - when this happens, it freezes up and I can only press the power button to turn it off. Don't know whether this is illuminating or not, but thought it might be important.

Have a good Christmas / Chanukah / Holiday etc!

Hi

Finally I got around to carrying out your instructions concerning the drivers. So I uninstalled, ran driver sweeper in safe mode and then reinstalled new drivers from the net. Couldn't do this with the ethernet driver, I tried that earlier and as you would imagine, there was no internet connection once it was gone, so I couldn't download any new drivers. However, after completing the above, i made sure to update the ethernet driver through device manager. Problem is, after all of this, my PC still crashes regularly.

If you check the minidump folder I've attached, you'll see that I've had plenty of BSOD occurences throughout the festive season! I carried out the above last night, around 19:00. I've had three since then, the last one while a CD was burning.

Another thing I've noticed is that when my PC is booting up, a message says "AMD DATA CHANGE - UPDATE NEW DATA TO DMI" - Don't know whether this is relevant, but thought I'd mention it

If you can think of anything else it might be, then great - your help is very much appreciated!! If not I'll try reinstalling Windows 7, though I have a feeling that that might not even stop it!

Thanks and Happy New Year!
