im trying to connect to the internet at a motel and originally I got the unknown error occurred message so I used the trouble shooter then ran the fix it provided. No improvement just anew message about the checking the network adapter so I did that then the message change to contact your service provider. So I undid that fix and ran the network diagnostic. I did this several times and it came back with couldn't find the problem so I clicked on look for additional options which directed me to online/offline help/support well obvious I could only use the offline help search. nothing there but 100 or so "similar" topics which were not even close to my problem mainly suggestions to reset the modem which I obviously can't do because I don't have physical access to the damn thing. I should also mention that my girlfriend has been working online problem free this entire time using the same network but with windows 8 and ie 10. Two days later with four days of my stay here left I still can connect to every network on the block but have no internet access and now the message consistantly reads server not responding. I've tried disabling firewalls on both windows and my additional internet security software, I've reconfigured internet settings and restored the whole damn computer, I ran IPconfig. you name it I think I've tried it. I recently went back to the diagnostic logs and the ipconfig reports and everything looks good until I come to the last two lines

connected: no
reason:0x00028001

I searched the code from my phones browser and came up with jack what is it and how the hell can I fix it. please somebody help me because my laptop is not gonna survive the next four days I almost threw the damn thing off the balcony yesterday.

Please go to programs, accessories, command prompt and enter this command:

ipconfig /all

Post the output on here if you need help interpreting it.

Go to the wireless adapter, properties, DNS server address. Manually set both addresses to 192.168.8.1

Solution
I tried to but it won't let me submit those changes and tells me the two dns servers must have different addresses

This thread is more than 6 years old. I suspect te OP May have checked out by now!
