Windows 7 HELP!! BSOD... Should I buy a new computer?

JoshuaH

New Member
I've been having about 4-5 BSOD randomly over the past few months... Not a huge deal, although a little annoying.

But, starting this Thursday, I have a live webinar training that I'm conducting, and a crash would be BAD. Should I buy a new computer or is there a fix?

I'm attaching my log files.

Thanks!

Hi Joshua,
thanks for supplying the report although it's better if you could zip the actual dump files and post them. Just looking through the report though I'd hazard that updating your drivers and perhaps bios if needed would help some.
Check your RAM using memtest: http://www.memtest.org/ Check one stick at a time.
As I'm sure your aware the dump files can be found here:

Joshua:
Please edit your previous post or add another that includes the SPD tab from CPUz.
Thanks
Randy

SPD added above. Thanks.

Also, what's the safest/fastest way to get all of those updated drivers?

The memory is set wrong !!

Should be 400 Mhz 6-6-6-18 1.8v.

Load 'optimized defaults' in the bios and save.

Interesting... I've never played with any of the BIOS setting before... Should I still update the drivers? What's the fastest/safest way to do so?

There is actually no fastest way. It will take some time and effort on your part to track them down. Use device manager and determine to the best of your ability the individual component's manufactuer, model name, model number and any version specific numbers and use google to see what you can come up with. Additionally if device manager doesn't provide enough information in plain english then you may try (in device manager) right clicking the device (Cybercore has already given you info on the the file name and it's related device) and choosing properties, then select the details tab and then click the drop down and select Hardware Ids, that will produce a list of IDs starting with PCI\VEN_ usually the first or second from the top will produce the best results, google those numbers or go Link Removed - Invalid URL or here using IE8 and see if they produce any specifics regarding your hardware which will then allow you to then go to the vendor's site and get the proper driver.
The safest way is to either rely on the computer manufacturer's website or the actual hardware device manufacturer's website to obtain the latest drivers for your specific hardware.
As I said, nothing fast or easy but worth the effort in most cases.

Yes you should as your crashes will never stop with the RAM set wrong. Start PC >> Hit 'Del' >> Bios setup >> You want "Optimized defaults" or something to that effect >> Save and exit.

Once the RAM is working right, go on update drivers.

Thanks for all of the help!

I entered my BIOS yesterday, and I cannot find a setting to load optimized defaults or anything at all like that. It doesn't look like anything but the video memory allocation can be modified.

Any advice?

If you can find the memory settings in your bios, you can adjust manually - 400 Mhz 6-6-6-18 1.8v. But first set them all to "Auto".
Attach the memory tab again after you apply the new settings.

It appears that my BIOS may be "locked" by the laptop manufacturer.

Is it normal for a laptop to have improper memory settings, or does this mean something is going bad in my hardware?

Not really, unless a password was preset and not given to you. For the rest, search for DRAM subsection.

I have heard many people complain that their particular Laptop BIOS options are extremely limited. I suppose that this could be intentional on the part of the individual laptop manufacturer, so that the user only has minimal settings available to change or configure and typically you would only consider using BIOS flash updates that were provided from the laptop manufacturer. So I don't quite understand why they would intentionally cripple the BIOS interface but I've heard many comments from others that this seems to often be the case.
It seems that each BIOS writer (AMI, Phoenix, etc.) are all slightly different and then of course each version for each MoBo is slightly different and also subsequent releases may also be slightly different. So where exactly you would look for to find the previously discussed settings (if in fact they are available to you at all) will be different in most cases and you may need to just boldly explore the various tabs, columns and rows.
