Windows Vista Internet Connection Problems

Having just installed Windows 7, I booted up and everything loaded fine. However, I can't get any internet access.
When I hover over the network icon, it displays an error regarding wireless networks, but I have an ethernet cable running directly from my router into my PC.
Any suggestions as to how to fix the issue?

Also, just to be clear on something, most programs will have to be reinstalled on the partition with Windows 7 installed on it?

Is this after you setup Internet connection in this PC with newly installed Windows 7[ ? Bit ? Build? ]?

If you have not already setup your Internet Connection: Follow these steps to create one:

  1. Click Start ( Windows Globe icon) > Control Panel
  2. In Category view of Control Panel locate Network and Internet and under that View network status and tasks and click View network status and tasks
  3. In the Network and Sharing Center window that pops up if it does not show that your Computer is connected through your LAN to the Internet ( I'm making assumptions based on the limited information you have posted about your setup which only mentions about a Router and Ethernet cable from that to this PC with Windows 7 and specifically saying no Wireless Adapter) , look below Change your networking setup section and click on Setup a new connection or network
  4. In the next popup, click on Connect to the Internet.
  5. Use that Wizard to setup your Broadband ISP ( again presuming based on the mention of Ethernet adaptrer and Router)
Any and all programs you want to use in Windows 7 and that are compatible with that OS, have to be installed. Most importantly Install Antivirus before browsing too long on the Internet!!!

If this does not help , please post details of your current setup for a more comprehensive answer

I have realised now that the problem is that I don't have the relevant drivers installed. I put in the disk for my motherboard drivers, and also tried a downloaded copy, but both gave the same error, which said that the operating system is not supported (though vista is).

The motherboard I am using is the Asus P5K (E3720). I'm not sure if anyone else with the same motherboard has experienced a similar problem, but if anyone has, and has been able to fix the issue, then I would love to know how you did it. Of course any advice from anyone else would be much appreciated.

me too

I have an asus p5nsli and I also can not run my mobo disk... have you been able to find a solution?

are you directly connected also?

I would forget about the mobo disk and let Windows do the driver update on reboot. By the time the hardware arrives on the store shelves the disk is already out of date. The only thing that didn't load automatically was the Intel chipset installation tool ant the Intel CPU id tool. I had the similiar problems with internet connection. Two temperary fixes I tried were to 1, roll back the network adapter driver and 2, system restore. The permanent fix I found (at Windows suggestion) was to set up a Home Group. It would have saved me some trouble to set it up on installation. I didn't want it but it seemed to sort out the network confusion for Windows.

Well , if you have not got the appropriate drivers for your onboard LAN and Wireless adapters you cannot expect Windows 7 Betato enable the Network -Internet Setup in that Computer. Therefore the very first step before trying to launch your browser to access the Internet, was to check the Device Manager [ Windows Logo key + Pause/break key--> Device Manager from the left pane]to make sure there are no error symbols against any of the devices especially Network adapters and Display adapters as the former gives you the ability to connect to the Internet to download software needed to troubleshoot other issues while the latter makes it easier on the eyes with a properly configured monitor screen. If you find an exclamation point [!] or question mark [?] on a yellow background with an Others entry in the Device Manager you should get details about the device and fix the problem, usually by updating the driver.

Your Motherboard seems to have VISTA drivers both 32-bit and 64-bit. But you have not mentioned the details of Windows 7 beta dvd you are using to install in this system; neither its Build nor its Bits [x32 or x64? ] are mentioned in your posts so far. Your MoBo is capable of using either 32 Bits or 64 Bits and the driver selection must be based on what OS you are installing.

If you can post your findings on the Device Manager, and the Win7 disc details, someone may be able to help you troubleshoot that. Even if the system has Windows VISTA drivers , Windows 7 Beta need not accept them and there are no other troubleshoots if compatibility mode fails for this beta OS.
Good luck.

The device manager showed that there were no drivers for the ethernet controller.
Also, I am running the 32 bit version of Windows 7 build 7000.

Asus download site has Chipset drivers and LAN drivers (2) for your MoBO Model: P5K-E. The URL is ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

Download both Chipset and LAN drivers (2) for VISTA 32.

Install Chipset driver for VISTA 32 first and then install the LAN drivers for your Network adapter
Then follow previously posted steps to setup ethernet connection using Computer's NIC > Modem and once successful in getting Internet, then set up Computer's NIC >ROUTER>MODEM..> Internet

I noticed the latest build 7105 has better support for networking and drivers...its a work in progress. You may have to use another PC and download drivers to a floppy or USB. Have you tried setting UAC to the lowest setting? This would stop the system blocking unsigned drivers.

I've a different problem

My Windows 7 can connect to the Internet. But none of the programs, except IE 8 64 bit, can connect to the internet.
What is the solution?

What version of Windows 7 are you using? Did you perform a "Custom" or "Upgrade" install? Which programs are having trouble connecting to the internet?

Also, doyou have firewall enabled which is preventing access to the internet for specific applications? Also, for your benefit, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here Windows 7 Category . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You are welcome to also check the threads available there for additional assistance and feedback.

This is also my question. I have upgraded from Vista 64 bit to Win 7 64 bit. Yahoo messenger can get online. IE 8 64 bit can too. And also windows update. But I can't update my virus protection or anything else. I have been working on this problem for 3 days now. Everything shows I am online. This worked just fine with Vista. I have updated all drivers with ASUS.

No Internet connections available!

I recently installed Norton 360 on my MSI netbook and now I have this internet connection issue. Is it related, I don't know but I hope someone can help me here. Everything was working fine until this Norton installation. Now I can connect on the LAN but wireless is not possible. It is not picking up any surrounding signals, my older laptop running on XP Pro is showing all the signals. I tried to update the driver but it says I have the latest and the device is working fine. I have rebooted my router twice, I have disabled Firewall but nothing. Can anyone suggest a solution? TIA

I'm not sure, but if this happened to me, and I suspect as you seem to suspect, that Norton 360 might be the culprit, then I would probably first uninstall it by going here Link Removed - Invalid URL
read the page and any subsequent instructions carefully. Even if you have uninstalled it previously, I would probably still run the uninstaller tool just for peace of mind. Also you may want to check into something a little bit more networking friendly like Microsoft Security Essentials here Link Removed due to 404 Error it doesn't seem to cause as much, network related problems as some of the others and seems to have a smaller footprint overall.

I removed Norton 360 but it did not solve the problem, so I rolled back the driver and that seems to do the trick. I recalled seeing a message after installing Norton 360 that a driver is not compatible but there was no other details available so I left it. My wireless worked for about a day then stopped. That might have corrupted the wireless driver or whatever. I am installing MS anti-virus now.
Thanks very much for your help.

It seems that we've had a few problems lately with members choosing to install optional driver updates from Windows Updates, I know in the past it has, for me at least, created more problems then it seems to have resolved, so as a general rule always get your driver updates from the actual manufacturers website of your specific device. Anyway glad to here the you were able to resolve your issue and thanks for posting back and letting us all know. Make sure that you run the norton removal tool before attempting to install any other antivirus software, since just doing an uninstall from within the control panel-> programs and features utility seems to leave some problematic remnants of the old norton software.

It's me again with another No Internet Connection! Having solved the last issue and installed MS Anti- Virus, everything worked well until yesterday, I clicked Update to update the anti virus definition and today the wireless stopped! LAN is still OK. I updated the driver from the manufacturer's side, nothing, I rolled it back, nothing, I disabled all firewall, restarted windows after installation, nothing. The wireless driver cannot detect any wireless signal. not from my wireless, not the neighbors, nothing! I am out of ideas, please help! Thanks

Try;
1. Device Manager, expand network adapters, select your wireless adapter, right click on it and choose uninstall, you should be prompted with a window that asks if you want to remove the drivers, choose yes and reboot......or
2. Sytem restore, to a restore point earlier than yesterday
Give either or both a try and
Keep us posted
