Windows 7 No internet connection after changing to new modem-router

Hi there..I've just bought a new router-modem (lynksys x2000) to replace my old modem.
After going through the setup(by using quick install guide CD-ROM provide with router-modem), i've got no internet connection. My laptop can connect to the router-modem but not the internet.

Do my new modem have its own firewall?(I know my laptop firewall is running). Do i need to disable the firewall? If yes, which one should i disable, my laptop of modem.

Need help...

Thanks & regards,

Eugene

Could you let us know if this is being used with DSL or Cable?

In the Wan light the correct color and not blinking?

Do you need to clone a MAC address from another computer?

Do you need to register the modem with the ISP?

Used with DSL.
WAN light stable & not blinking.
I've no idea about cloning MAC from other computer.
Also not sure about the need to register the modem with the ISP. (FYI, my old modem was provided by the ISP).

Or maybe do I need to reset the settings on the old modem before i install the new one?

Some settings are only necessary with Cable. But a steady white WAN light is a good sign.

The User Manual has a troubleshooting section, have you gone through that? If so, where does it break down?

Yup I got steady white color WAN light.

I will try to go through the troubleshooting section again..so i need to unplug my old modem(since i'm using it now) and plug in the new one.

Will keep you update on my findings later. Thanks.

Thank you

Before you unplug it, make sure you have all the settings for your setup, such as dynamic or static connection, or anything else you may need to fill in.

Hi..sorry for my late reply. I was outstation for a while.

"Your computer cannot connect to the Internet.
Follow the instructions until your computer can connect to the Internet:
•• Make sure that the Modem Router is powered on. The Power LED should
be green and not flashing.
•• If the Power LED is flashing, then power off all of your network devices,
including the Modem Router and computers. Then power on each device
in the following order:
a. Modem Router
b. Computer
•• Check the LEDs on the device’s front panel. Make sure the Power, DSL,
and at least one of the numbered Ethernet LEDs are lit. If they are not,
then check the cable connections. The computer should be connected to
one of the Ethernet ports numbered 1-4 on the device, and the device’s
DSL port must be connected to the ADSL line."

Above are the troubleshooting steps from the modem router manual. I did go through it but still I got no internet connectivity message.

Then i tried setting up using the browser-based utility(192.168.1.1). Below are my settings parameter:
1. ADSL-Encapsulation: RFC 2516 PPPoE
2. Multiplexing : LLC
3. VPI: 0, VCI: 35 (as per my old router modem setting)
4. user name: xxxxxx@streamyx (as per provide by ISP)
5. password: xxxxxx (as provide by ISP)
6. DHCP: Enable, Starting IP address : 192.168.1.100 (default setting by Linksys. Didn't change anything here)

After I save my settings, then i press the connect button on the status page. But the funny this is that the connection status keep on displaying "connecting" instead of connected. I've for more than 10 minutes still status "connecting". The IP address, subnet mask & default gateway column all shows zero value.
I'm connected to the modem router but not to the internet.

I am trying to follow you comments about the setup.

I do not know what the Multiplexing and VPI/VCI should be, so if your old one worked, it is probably correct.

I do not see a place to put User Name and Password, maybe on the setup wizard.

IP Settings should be Automatically Obtain IP Address, and it will come from the ISP. When the Modem is connected, this info should be filled in.

Host Name and Domain Name, I suppose are given by the ISP?

I get a little confused here because you are doing a ADSL setup, but the next page (web access) shows an Ethernet mode setup, which you would use with a Cable Modem... On that same page is the Network Setup, so I will assume this is for your LAN and not related to the WAN setup.

Then you get into the Wireless Security settings. Since I do not remember if you are connecting wirelessly, are these necessary?

I can't read the images for the setup Wizard, but you have checked to make sure the info you entered is showing in on the Web access pages?

Open a command window and type ipconfig /all to check if the IP addresses are as you would think. If you are showing a 269.xxxx address, then your network adapter is not recognizing a Home network and is assigning a Windows default address.

If you like, hold shift and right click the desktop, then select "Open Command Window Here". Type the following and use whatever name for your file you want..

ipconfig /all > Myconfig.txt

You can edit it as you like, and add it to your response, or attach using the paperclip. Maybe it will show something.

As far as the firewall is concerned, try turning it off, but they normally don't stop access.

Your comment about not seeing any WAN IP address or DNS address, probably means your ISP is not assigning you an address for some reason. It should be doing that, and I assume the old unit was set the same way.

It looks like your DSL is working, which agrees with the white light, but you are not communicating with the ISP's server.

The PPPoE settings are something you have to know and I cannot confirm if they are correct. Is the PPPoE version you are showing, the only option and that is what the other one uses?

Your username, which you are showing, does not have a .com or some extension?

Did they mention anything about entering a Domain name or Hostname ?

I will have to look up what PVC is, bu there are a couple of Autodetect options, and you have them both turned off...

You do have the unit plugged directly into the phone plug with no filter? Have you tried changing phone outlets? If you have the ability, have you tried running a line directly from the outside phone box to the Gateway?

I would probably call the phone company and have them check your line to see if they can communicate with the modem. It may be set up to use a specific MAC address, but just guessing.

Hi..My internet connection solved. What I did was, I update my linksys X2000 firmware.

The existing firmware was version V1.0.00, update it to the latest one V2.0.01 (download it from CISCO homepage).

Thank you very much for your help Saltgrass. I really appreciate your advise. I've learned a lot for the past 1 week.
But I still don't get it, why by just frimware update can settle my modem problem?

You would probably need to read the release notes on the firmware, maybe it would mentions something relevant. I just got an E3000 and set it up. There are a lot of settings I do not understand, but default usually works.

The page below is about setting up the ADSL, and it refers to PPPoA instead of PPPoE. But you would know best what your system needs.

Glad you got it working.
