I have recently upgraded my complete system hardware and cannot seem to load Windows 7. The setup begins and loads the windows files and then when it gets to the screen 'Starting Windows', the hard drive and the DVD ROM lights stop blinking and the installation just freezes.

I tried to boot my old drive with Windows XP and it shows the windows loading screen and then, for a moment shows the Blue Screen(BSOD) and just restarts. I am however able to boot in Safe Mode.

My system specs are as follows:

Gigabyte M68MT-D3 , dual BIOS

AMD Athlon X2 250

Mercury 2gb DDR3 - 1333Mhz, 240 pin long DIMM

MSI N210 1gb DDR3 Video card

Segate 500gb SATA

Any help in this regard is highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jo

It seems like you are facing issues with loading Windows 7 after upgrading your system hardware. The symptoms you described, such as freezing during the installation process and encountering the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on Windows XP, indicate potential hardware compatibility or driver issues. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve these issues:

Windows 7 Installation Freeze:

  1. Check Hardware Compatibility: Ensure that all your new hardware components are compatible with Windows 7. Check the manufacturer's website for updated drivers and compatibility information.
  2. Disconnect Non-Essential Hardware: Remove any unnecessary hardware components during the Windows 7 installation to check if any specific hardware is causing the freeze.
  3. BIOS Update: Update your motherboard BIOS to the latest version. This can sometimes resolve compatibility issues with new hardware.
  4. Memory Test: Test your RAM using tools like Memtest86 to check for any memory errors that could be causing the installation freeze.
  5. Hard Drive Check: Verify the health of your Seagate 500gb SATA drive. You can use tools like CrystalDiskInfo to check the SMART status of the drive for any issues.

    Windows XP BSOD:

  6. Safe Mode: Since you can boot into Safe Mode, try uninstalling recently added drivers or software that might be causing the BSOD.
  7. Driver Updates: Ensure that all your drivers are up to date, especially for the new hardware components you've added.
  8. Windows Update: Make sure that your Windows XP system is fully updated with the latest patches and updates from Microsoft.

    General Recommendations:

    • Driver Installation: During Windows 7 installation, ensure that you have the latest drivers for your motherboard, graphics card, and other essential components ready to install.
    • Hardware Connections: Double-check all hardware connections to ensure everything is correctly seated.
    • Clean Installation: Consider performing a clean installation of Windows 7 to rule out any conflicts with previous installations. Before proceeding with any changes, it's advisable to back up your important data to prevent any potential data loss. If the issue persists, you might want to seek assistance from a technician to further diagnose and resolve the hardware or driver-related problems. Let me know if you need further assistance or if you encounter any specific error messages during the troubleshooting process.
