    After I assemble an internal drive within the external enclosure with the cables are ready, do I create a simple volume, or just format or do both? I am hoping to salvage my other relatively new HDD into a portable HDD to contain photos etc. I would also like to image to this drive.

    If I have a folder pointing to a network share that does not exist and I try to open that folder windows will 'freeze' that folder for about 30 seconds while windows tries to find it before telling me it can't....
