Hey, guys! Here is a simple way to backup and restore your Start screen.
1) Extract the .zip to your desktop.
2) Open START.
3) Right-click on BACKUP START and replace my username (ALEX) with yours. Repeat this step for RESTORE START. I wanted to add a variable so that you didn't have to do...
I have two windows 8.1 32 bit installations. One on a VM on a Windows Desktop, one on a Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2, 8 inch. The VM version shows the start screen with the blue background that I chose during setup and it shows the power button along side the search button in the upper right corner...
Okay so people hate Windows Vista and Windows 8. But I want to know which is actually better. Windows 8 and 8.1 is hated because of the Start Screen. But people hate Windows Vista because it was totally unstable and It was full of bugs. It also had some compatibility issues.
Sounds crazy, but the tiles keep re-arranging themselves. I spend time getting them arranged just the way I want and then when I return to the screen later, they have changed position.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Jim
A confession. There is so little major difference, between Windows 8.1 and theTtechnet preview, that I have become rather disinterested in it.

Hey, how's it going?
I started using Windows 8 for the first time today and actually like it quite a bit. I think with some tweaks, I will like it more than Windows 7 and previous versions of the OS. However, I have spent approximately an hour trying to figure out one thing.
I would like to...
There is something that has come as part of 8.1.1 that I wonder how many are aware of it or how nice it is. Traditionally or historically we have been accustom to Desktop & Taskbar. Not long ago came the ability to Pin things to Taskbar. Recently, that came to include the ability to Pin Store...

In testing Windows 8.1 Update 1 on a wide range of PCs over the past few months, I've seen some interesting behaviors, including a few I can't yet explain. But here's a slightly more ordinary behavior that you can in fact toggle on or off in Update 1: That Start...
I get really frustrated w/ people saying or thinking there is nothing in Windows 8.1, from Microsoft, telling them, educating them or guiding them w/ enlightenment or instructions on How To use the OS. There is!! Yes, there is!
There problem isn't that it doesn't exist but, rather that people...

I found out that Retro UI is a good app as a start menu. The reason is that it allows you to still use the start screen if you want to and adds a task bar at the bottom of your start screen. So, you can use the start screen as an improved desktop. I could be wrong so please correct me if I am...

I did a restore on my laptop yesterday, and now it won't allow me to open most of the apps on my Start screen. It tells me my "developers license has expired". I went in a did a resync and that didn't help, so I decided to uninstall and reinstall. It lets me uninstall, but when I try to...
I have an HP laptop that came with Windows 8 installed. One of the automatic updates ran and changed pathways to my files. If I click on Libraries, my documents, music, and pics that were there before the upgrade are not there now. I have to click c:/users/myusername/ then whichever folder...

Hi
Because I have a lot of stuff it's kind of a pain that Windows 8 start screen adds 2 new columns when I add 2 items to a block of programs.
I end up with all these categories that have 2 or 3 icons off to the side when one new column would do it in a much more compact format. Some...
We know the following:
WinQ = Search Everywhere
WinF = Search Files
WinW = Search Settings
We know typing on Start will give Search Everywhere Charm Bar

Running Windows 8 on HP. Have Microsoft Account set up and am able to access IE from Desktop but not from Start Screen. When I go to Network and Internet section, tells me I'm not connected to a network.
What to do?
There are some things w/in Windows 8.1 of which you may not be aware but, should be.
1. Bottom-Left Corner... There is now a Windows logo button on the Taskbar. This acts much the same as the Windows key on the keyboard. Hitting it will give the Start screen & one can toggle back & forth w/...

I’m running VS2012 on a Windows8 64-bit computer. I posted this on the Microsoft Windows8 forum, but received no replies.
After running the VS2012 update (I started it from within VS and then closed VS) I went to the Start Screen and the icon in the VS2012 tile is now a white square. I unpinned...
