Hey all,

So as the title says are there any Ubuntu users in the windows7forums community? I use Ubuntu 8.04 which is currently the newest long term support build. It's really the first Linux OS that I've gotten involved with in depth and I have to say I'm very impressed with it. It's rock solid, the large amount of features are very impressive and it has to be one of the easiest Linux Os's to pick up I've ever seen..

I love the Desktop cube effect.. such a great way to work with multiple apps among other things. It's amazing too that Ubuntu has all the visual effects that it does and yet the minimum requirements to run it are sooo low.. It really does "breath new life into old computers". ;)

I also like how in Ubuntu you can see/access all the other partitions you have setup within your HDD. You can do anything to the files just as you would do within a Windows OS. That being said it is kinda sketchy though how you can access/modify your windows system files within Ubuntu too, I don't think that's a very good feature to have enabled. Especially for beginners to Linux.. On the other side of this, it's kinda odd how you can't see the chunk of HDD that has Ubuntu setup on it from within Windows... well at least I can't see it on my main comp.. But I'm guessing that's probably because Linux uses the "free space" of a Hard Drive to setup it's own partition and so on. Not a big deal, just an oddity I thought.

But overall I think Ubuntu is a very well done OS that provides numerous unique features and never stops amazing me when it comes to visuals. If only it could play games as well as Windows does... ;) Maybe someday!!!

I'd like to know if any of you use Ubuntu and what your overall thoughts on it are.. :)

Solution
I recently downloaded Ubuntu 9.04 but I haven't installed it yet. The problem is I lost the hard drive that I used to run Ubuntu distros on. My W7 install is on a Raid1 drive. I have a partition on that drive that I have considered installing Ubuntu on but I have doubts as to whether it will install on a Raid drive. It has always read my Raid as being 2 separate drives in the past. Does anybody know if it will install correctly or not?

I would try to find this in the Ubuntu Forum but I really suck with command line operation and the info I get in that forum always just confuses me. I tried to find the answer to this question there already but as usual I couldn't find my answer. Is there someone here who could just answer yes or no?
Hi all. I've just joined this forum and have only had Ubuntu installed for a short time, dual booting through grub with Win7x64.

Seems to be fast and relatively stable, though it refused to boot today. I went into recovery mode and without having the slightest idea what I was doing, managed to get it updated and running again. I'm now terrified of shutting it down in case it won't start again.

My computer came configured as a dual boot because one of the video editors I use runs better under linux. (ubntu 9.04)
Never had any trouble with windows or linux

Hell yeah I'm an Ubuntu user :-D. Been using it for over a year and it is awesome, though Windows 7 is also sick too :-D

you just found another one. i have been using ubunti since 2004. warty i believe. i dual-boot between windows and ubuntu 9.04. my laptop has vista 32bit and ubuntu, and my desktop has win7 32 bit and ubuntu.

I plan to use Ubuntu on my old desktop. I'll probably dual boot Win XP x64 and Ubuntu. I've been using the W7 RC on it but I recently retired it since I got my new machine. Besides the RC starts the dying process today and I'm not going to buy it for that old dinosaur. It's going to be my Linux box.

There's no way I'm going to dual boot on my new machine. I had way too many problems with it in the past and it's just not worth the aggravation.

Hi,

I have been running Linux Mint on my desktop since November of 2009. I went to several stores with money in hand to buy the Windows 7 Family Pack, but it was gone. Since I have to use Windows at work, running Linux at home seems reasonable plus the security and stability are great. Lack of games seems to be the biggest weakness of Linux.

Well I run Windows 7 beta while it lasted and Ubuntu dualboot, it was great, Ubuntu 9.10 is awesome
