Windows 7 help! win 7 stuck at shutdown screen

hey guys,

I'm new here and having problems with my girlfriends laptop. it's a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6005, only a few months old. Recently, within the past 2 days, it's been giving trouble with shutting down or restarting... in other words.... it won't. only way seems to be to hold down the power button. It shuts down fine in safe mode with network. Even no apps running still does it. could it be one of the processes, in task manager. i tried defaulting the power mode and somewhere even said to turn off the fax through windows features and still nothing. seeing as it's relatively new, i would assume all the drivers are up to date. stressin' out here...

If it restarts fine from Safe Mode, that means that something you installed or did in the past 2 days is the cause. It could be a new firewall or AV you installed or even something as simple as a new game.

So do a restore to at least 3 days ago and that should solve it.

Check the event viewer to see if any error or warning messages show up around the actual time the errors or problems occur.

Try to reboot the System in Selective Startup Run Selective Startup using System Configuration maybe some startup item is messing and not letting the System to shutdown properly.

where do you find the restore option under. i did it once on a xp and ended up clearing the whole laptop.

Yes, it could be a process or service and Captain Jack's link to the selective startup instructions will help you chase it down. There is also an additional link to clean booting Windows 7 which may help here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/
but if you still want to try a system restore
Click the start orb, right click computer, choose properties, select the System Protection tab at the top, then the system restore button, and check the box that says show more restore points if needed.

Recently, we have started to experience shutdown issues along with periodically it freezes for 2-5 minutes and then continues on. I would like to first resolve the shutdown issues so I am attaching the minidump zip file as suggested in other posts. Thanks for any help you can provide.

These were all caused by a priver power state issue. I suspect from one of the outdated drivers on you system.

How To Find Drivers:

- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
