Windows 7 Internet connection problems - quick help needed

Okay, not even sure where to start. Moving from Australian providers Optus to Telstra based Exetel.

The brand new TP-Link 8817 modem is connected to the phone line (with the filter on), the computer via ethernet and the power source.

Four lights on the modem are lit (power, internet, lan, adsl).

I've gone into the web GUI settings for the modem and done the quick set up. Username/password input, PPPoE connection, 8/35 on the VPI/VCI, connection type PPPoe LLC.

All saved. Now I go to set up my connection using the connection wizard. Input password/username. Connect...... doesn't get past the 'connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPOE)'.

Now I'm getting 'error 651'.

Previously I've tried with another modem and bridged it, using a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND as the router. This didn't work, Windows saying it was a 'DNS server isn't responding'.

I'm at a loss with what the problem is, two different forums have been unable to help.

Any thoughts guys? Need any more information?

I have to ask, are you using an ADSL filter on the Modem connection?

ADSL connections can be very susceptible to noise on a phone line. Have you tried other outlets?

Well, I may be a little confused, or something has changed since I had ADSL. The filters were normally put on phones to block the ADSL signal. If you have it on the modem, would it not block the signal you need?

Clark is correct you do not use the noise filter on the DSL line, only on the actual line that goes to the phones using the same line.
Second usually you;
A. Don't configure your username and password in two places for a PPPoE connection. Either on the WAN side of the Router if a router is being used or on the PC in the connection properties not both.
and
B. You don't connect nor configure the connection on the WAN MiniPort device but rather on the ethernet adapter itself.... are you maybe connecting using a USB connection or something?
So can you explain your network just a bit more. Which TP-Link 8817 it seems there are a few different ones.
Assuming you have only a single ethernet cable running from the TP Link to the computer's network adapter can you share with us the Manufacturer Name, Model Name, Model Number, Revision Number, Driver version and Driver date for that adapter?
Can you open a command prompt and type
ipconfig /all and paste the results into your next post.

The filter has a section for ADSL and for phone. Maybe it's called a splitter.

Modem is a TP-Link TD-8817, that's all it says on the box. What other things do you want to know about my network?

As for network adapter, this is from device manager: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller. Driver version: 7.26.902.2010. Driver date: 2/09/2010.

Update the driver for your Realtek adapter from here Realtek using the following manual update method
Driver Install - Manual Method

  1. Download the driver and extract it to a folder.
  2. Open the Device Manager.
  3. Right click the device you wish to change the drivers for. You can select Properties > Driver > Driver Details to check you have the right device.
  4. Choose Update Driver Software.
  5. Select Browse My Computer For Driver Software.
  6. Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
  7. Select Have disk...
  8. Select Browse..
  9. Navigate to the extracted folder and double click on the .inf file
  10. Hit OK, then Next and the driver(s) will then begin to install.
  11. After it has installed, GoTo C:\Windows\System32\Drivers. Locate the driver you've just updated, right click it and check the dates under its properties.
Remove the USB connection from the equation (disconnect or disable).
Disable IPv6 by unchecking the box in the properties of the Realtek Network adapter.
With only the Realtek adapter connected to your network, see what you can ping.
Open a command prompt and type
ping 192.168.1.1
hit enter (post back the results)
then type
ping 209.85.145.105 (post back the results)
open a browser and in the address (URL) bar (not search box) type
209.85.145.105
and hit enter (post back the results
