Basically my ethernet capability flew out the window ranomly the other day. Wireless works perfectly however..

before ...the other day.... it has been working solidly for almost a year

Im plugged into a router which is running off my cable modem, both sitting less than a foot away from me. Also hooked up to the router is another computer, and my xbox
the xbox works but the other computer cant seem to get a local connection either.

at first i assumed they were having an ip conflict of some sort, but why now after all this time?

I have tried:
- ipconfig /release - /renew
- abolishing bonjour
- taking the other pc completely off the router/network
- updating drivers.....rolling back the updates
- different cables different ports
-plugging directly into the modem
- and asking nicely

im on my laptop, Dell studio
also the first time i noticed this happen was directly after having powered down the modem and router.

below is the ipconfig

Thanks in advance to anyone that has any thoughts...

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Try this and see if it helps
Click the start orb and type
device manager
into the search box and hit enter
Expand network adapters
select then right click the Broadcom (wired adapter) and choose properties
In the resultant dialog box select the "Advanced" tab
In the left column select "Network Address" yours maybe worded slightly different (MAC address or Physical Address) words to that affect.
In the right column select the radio button next to the "Value:" box and enter this
002219DD80E3
That's the actual MAC address of your Broadcom card minus the hyphens (dashes, "-")
OK your way back out of there and reboot.
Keep us posted
Regards
Randy

Hello Trouble and thank you for the swift response.

Okay i was able to follow your instructions and enter that MAC address into the Value box, but to no avail.

In my network and sharing center it still shows two active networks
The first - a home network, which shows my wireless network connection (still working flawlessly)
The second - a 'public, "Unidentified Network," which shows a Local area connection (and still has no internet access)

these are normally under the same name with a working ethernet connection

Can you click on Public network in the Network and Sharing Center and change it to home or work?
Can you click the local area connection (name) and in the resultant dialog box click the details button and confirm the the IPv4 addressing schema is correct and appropriate for you network including the inside edge of your router as the default gateway. Consider disabling (un-checking) IPv6 in the properties of both network adapters to test.
Can you temporarily disable the wireless connection
just type
ncpa.cpl
into the search box after clicking the start orb
select then right click the wireless connection and choose disable
and then open the network and sharing center and click the red X or run the troubleshooter and see what you get in the way of information.
With the wireless card disabled see what you can ping.
The inside edge of your router
ping 192.168.1.3
your primary DNS server
ping 209.18.47.61
Google
ping 64.233.169.99
let us know the results
Good luck
Randy

I am unable to click on public network and therefore cannot change it

I was however able to click local area connection and access the details. posted below

I apreciate your help so far but im about to go out of town till monday and wont be able to respond, (unless you catch me tomorrow) my pops knows a pretty good deal about networking so im going try and get some advice from him.

if you think of anything in the mean time im all ears mate.

happy holidays

Confirm you cannot change your (Network and sharing Centre - Change advanced sharing settings) to Work. Home can cause similar problems to those you are experiencing.
Also, I would recommend you try , in the properties of the Ethernet adapter,Clicking the Properties of the IP4 protocol and making sure you have "Obtain an IP address automatically" , and "Obtain DNs..etc" also on automatic.

:D See if you can identify the specifics regarding the Broadcom Adapter (model number). Go here Broadcom.com - Ethernet NIC Driver Downloads and download the latest driver for that card. Do what you need to do to extract the files contained in the zip archive (if needed).
Open device manager and expand network adapter and uninstall (remove) the Broadcom when prompted choose to remove software (drivers) also.
Right click the computer link at the top of the device manager tree and choose
Add legacy hardware
Next
Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)
Next
Highlight network adapters in list
Next
Have Disk (button)
Browse button
Navigate to the folder where you extracted the zipped driver file to.
Double click the .inf file
OK
Highlight Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet in list (if more than one is presented).
Click next
And next again
And finish
Reboot

I upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7 and kept getting the "Unidentified Public Network" for my LAN connection. I tried every solution I could find on the internet. Enabling/Disabling network Card. Installing/Uninstalling, rolling back the driver, updating the driver. ipconfig suggestions from the command prompt. I finally found the link below which reset the TCP/IP Settings. It placed my LAN connection into the home network, and Voila - Internet!

I hope it helps somebody else.

Cheers!
