Windows 7 Problem with Internet connection (drops frequently)

Hi guys!

I have some Internet issues with my computer. I had a D-Link DIR-655 router and it would drop connection 3-4 times a day for 4-5 minutes then come back on without me having to do anything at all. Tried a lot of things : changing router settings, upgrade router firmware, reset to factory default, reboot and nothing worked. So, I figured the router was the problem so I just bought a Cisco Linksys EA4500 today and I just had the same issue again : Internet stopped working for 4-5 minutes then came back... I did a diagnosis with Windows and it said : DNS server isn't responding. I know the problem isn't with my computer only because I am actually using wired connection with my PC, but I have also an IPod which is wireless and it drops at the same time and when ppl come to my house with laptops and use wireless connection they have the same problem too.

I just did an ipconfig but don't quite know how to read it so here it is :

My DNS settings on my PC are set to obtain ip and dns automatically when I look in the IPV4.

If someone can help it would be awesome because this is getting frustating.

All addresses, obtained by DHCP (obtained automatically) look ok. Two settings I'd change:

On the pc - disable IPv6 - it is not currently needed and has been identified as having potential to cause some problems.

On the router - change the lease time for IP address allocation to never expire (it is currently set to renew every 24 hours)

Neither of these may be causing a problem but it's worth dealing with them before looking further if necessary.

Thx I have just disabled IPv6 but I can't set the lease time to never expire on the router (I can go from 0 to 9999 minutes : it is currently set at 0 which means 24 hours). From what I've read (and my little knowledge on networking :S) if my PC loses connection because of the lease time then it means something is wrong in how my DHCP is renewing bacause I shouldn't lose Internet connection on a renew right?

We'll just see how it goes with the IPv6 disabled I'll keep you updated thx again for your help!

Try different Channels. May well be an interference issue. One channel you may find will offer greater, better stability than another.

Cheers,
Drew

I was going to suggest that as one of my first thoughts but the original post tells us that the problem occurs simultaneously on both wired as well as wireless connections.

Oh, right, ooops. Well, after rereading the whole thing, might consider swapping out the modem... root cause may be w/ that (current) unit. Contact your IP about that.

Cheers,
Drew

I already called my Internet provider because I also thought the modem might be at fault but when they checked it hadn't dropped connection for like 165 days so I figured the problem wansn't the modem. Could I ask them to look at specific things if I call them again which might indicate the modem isn't working properly or do they absolutely have to switch to a new one to see if things improve? I mean could the problem be something which they can't see in the "settings or configuration" and can't detect with the data they have in their system and have to physically switch modems to see if things improve?

Thx guys.

They may be able to "(re)provision" it remotely. I would have them swap it out for you to, @ least, eliminate it as the culprit (or not).

Cheers,
Drew

Hi guys just wanted to let you know that I haven't dropped Internet since disabling the IPv6 as suggested so I guess it might have been the problem since no other change was made.

So far so good.

Thanks for you help :)

Are we talking about a Cable or DSL ISP?

From what I can see, the D-Link may have a check box to "Enable DNS Relay". If yours does, have you tried checking or unchecking it. One thing I notice on Ipconfig readouts is some routers pass through the ISP DNS servers to my Network adapter and some don't. A Belkin router did not seem to, but a Linksys E3000 does. Maybe having your network adapter seeing the IPS's DNS servers directly would help.
