Windows 7 Random unresponsiveness, occassional BSOD

Hi there,

Been suffering with this problem for months and can't seem to remedy it.

When I first boot my system, or resume it from sleep, my PC will randomly freeze for about 30 seconds, then go back to normal. This happens anywhere from 4-6 times within the first 20 minutes, and then stops. I can usually then use it as normal (in fact when it works it works very smoothly) until I reboot/rewake.

I'm not sure if it's related, but I do get the occasional BSOD too. This seems to be becoming more frequent, but it is still relatively rare and there is no apparent pattern to it.

It is difficult to identify when exactly the problem started, but it seems to be sometime after I rebuilt the machine (new chassis, SSD, Memory).

I now have a 128GB SSD as my system drive, a 500GB user drive, and another 500GB drive for other storage. All drives have clean SMART data and chkdsk reports no issues. I suppose I am suspicious because this is my first SSD system and the first time I've experienced the issue.

Installed are 2x2GB DDR2 sticks of RAM. I've tested them with the windows utility and Memtest86, no issues.

The only other two changes were that I installed a 64bit version of windows and housed everything in a new case, but I can't see how either of those would be a problem?

I've updated all drivers, scanned with Windows Defender and Malware Bytes, removed external devices and swapped the PSU, all to no avail.

It's a bit worrying as I'm working on a few theses for tight deadlines and do not want to rely on Word's autosaves! Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I have used the 7 Forums Diagnostics tool and attached the zip file to the post.

Thanks in advance

[EDIT: Read the post here: http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-support/52249-temporary-unresponsiveness-after-startup.html . Booted in diagnostic start up and all was fine - so I'm guessing it's service/startup program related? Set to skeleton boot with only essential programs and services (but including things that diagnostic doesn't, so as to enable wifi etc), problem returned. How to go about identifying the boot service or program that leads to the hangs??]

The easiest thing to do (IMO) is a clean boot: How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista

If that stops the problem, then enable ½ of the 3rd party services to test, then do the other half. If it doesn't affect things, then enable all the 3rd party services.

Then do ½ of the startups, then do the other ½, etc, etc, etc - until you nail down the one that's causing the problem.

From the uploaded reports:

You have an Edimax nLite Wireless USB Adapter
I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win7/Win8 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7(and I suspect with Win8) - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7/Win8 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): [DEL] http://www.duplexsecure.com/faq#remove_32sptd [/DEL] Link broken as of 21 Jul 2012
New link (15 Aug 2012): http://www.duplexsecure.com/downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link: http://www.disc-tools.com/download/sptd
Manual procedure here: http://daemonpro-help.com/en/problems_and_solutions/registry_and_sptd_problems.html

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thanks for your prompt and thorough reply,Usasma.

You're right, the start-up lag disappeared with a clean boot. Am in the process of re-enabling services and start up items to try and see what was causing the issue, will report back if I identify it.
[Edit: This is very odd. I have now enabled all third party services and the start-up programs I was using before the clean boot, but the problem has not come back. I'm not complaining, but it's curious that there is ostensibly no difference between the clean boot and laggy boot... Would've been nice to identify the culprit.]

I think the BSOD must be a separate issue, being that it is comparatively rare. After sorting the above, I updated my Edimax driver to a new beta version, but I was already running a windows 7 one.

I also updated daemon tools, that was well out of date since updates were disabled. Do you think the update is enough, or are all versions of the SPTD driver troublesome? I could cope without it if it needs to be removed...

Regarding the other 3 drivers you identified (intelide and the two for the USB 3 adapter), I could not find an updated version of these using windows, the intel driver check, or manufacturer websites. So you recommend deleting them? Wouldn't that mean I won't be able to use my USB3.0 ports or IDE storage?

Problem with the BSOD is that its so rare that it's going to be difficult to know when it's been solved.

Thanks again for your help.

Daemon Tools (along with the Alcohol % software) is a known cause of BSOD's - and is, IME, the most common reason that we see BSOD's on th forums. I'd get rid of it if it were on my system.

Don't delete the other drivers! It may render your system unbootable!
Let's just wait on them and see what happens.

1) sptd.sys from Daemon Tools is still installed
2) I/O Error listed in memory dump - run hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics (start with the hard drive tests)
3) Other drivers (that you couldn't update) can't be ruled out until the above items are fixed.
