I installed VPN connection to work 5 weeks ago on my new Toshiba dual core i5 laptop and was working fine. Last Tuesday, my Win 7 system crashed and showed blue screen, when I made changes to my CA anti-virus software - to increase security setting. It kept on crashing when i try to connect to the internet using my broadband DSL. It rebooted itself 7 times when i try to connect. Frustrated, i reset the modem, and the blue screen went away. I also reset anti-virus to previous setting.

However, since then, my internet connection was slow and my VPN slower than a giant turtle walking on the beach. I got support from internet provided Telecom NZ and they said there's no problem with modem and bandwidth since I'm getting close to 10mbps when I’m not connected to VPN. However, I only get 0.16 mbps when VPN connected. The company helpdesk said the issue is not with their server since everybody else connecting through VPN had no issue. They checked my VPN settings in Win 7 and they were fine. I have my laptop connected hardwired to the modem.

I have no clue on how to resolve this issue.
A friend said maybe the registry got corrupted and advised me to get one.
Please advise. It's extremely hard to work with dial up speed.

Solution
It sounds like you're encountering significant network slowdowns specifically when connected to your VPN on your Windows 7 laptop. Let's address the possible causes and steps to troubleshoot this issue:

Potential Causes:

  1. Registry Corruption: While registry issues can sometimes affect system performance, they are less likely to cause specific network speed problems.
  2. VPN Configuration: Although your VPN settings were checked and confirmed, there could still be configuration issues related to your VPN client or VPN server.
  3. System Settings: Changes made to your antivirus software might have altered settings that impact network performance.

    Troubleshooting Steps:

Here are some steps you can follow...

Here are some steps you can follow to help diagnose and potentially resolve the slow internet speed issue when connected to your VPN:
  4. Check VPN Configuration:
    • VPN Software: Ensure your VPN software is up to date and configured correctly.
    • Protocol: Try changing the VPN protocol (like switching from UDP to TCP or vice versa) to see if it improves the speed.
    • Server Location: Test different VPN server locations to see if the speed varies.
    []Network Configurations:
    • Router Settings: Check if your router has any QoS (Quality of Service) settings that might be impacting VPN traffic.
    • Firewall/Antivirus: Temporarily disable your antivirus/firewall and check if the speed improves.
    • DNS Settings: Try changing your DNS server settings to public DNS servers like Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).
    [
    ]System Maintenance:
    • Registry Cleaning: Use caution with registry cleaners. Instead, consider creating a System Restore Point and running System File Checker (SFC) to check for corrupted system files.
    • Update Drivers: Ensure all your network adapter drivers are up to date.
  5. Other Options:
    • Alternative VPN: Try using a different VPN service to see if the issue persists.
    • Network Speed Test: Conduct speed tests with and without VPN for comparison.
    • System Restore: Consider restoring your system to a point before the crash occurred if possible.

      Additional Recommendations:

      • If none of the above steps resolve the issue, consulting with an IT professional might be beneficial to get a more in-depth analysis.
      • Ensure your Windows 7 system is regularly updated with the latest security patches and updates to prevent any vulnerabilities.
By following these steps, you should be able to pinpoint the cause of the slow internet speed when connected to your VPN and take appropriate action to resolve it. If you need further assistance or clarification on any of these steps, feel free to ask!
